Standard Specification for Bitumen-Saturated Woven Burlap Fabrics Used in Roofing and Waterproofing

ABSTRACT
This specification covers woven burlap fabrics, saturated with either asphalt or refined coal-tar for use in the membrane system of roofing or waterproofing. Asphalt-saturated burlap fabric shall be used with asphalt base plying cement; typical ones are mopping asphalts or appropriate solvent-bearing bituminous materials. Coal-tar-saturated burlap fabric shall be used with coal-tar base plying cements; typical ones are coal-tar pitches or appropriate solvent-bearing bituminous materials. The fabric to be saturated shall be composed of 100 % jute fiber except for two cotton threads in each selvage. In the process of manufacture, the dry burlap fabric shall be saturated with bitumen. Different tests shall be conducted in order to determine the following properties of woven burlap fabrics: gross mass per roll, mass of wrapping material and mandrel, width of roll, width of selvage, average net mass per unit area, detached comminuted surfacing, moisture, average breaking strength, pliability, mass of desaturated fabric, mass of saturant, thread count, and ash content.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers woven burlap fabrics, saturated with either asphalt or refined coal-tar, as specified by the purchaser, for use in the membrane system of roofing or waterproofing or as specified by the manufacturer.
1.1.1 Asphalt-saturated burlap fabricshall be used with asphalt base plying cement; typical ones are mopping asphalts conforming to Specifications D 312, D 449, or appropriate solvent-bearing bituminous materials.
1.1.2 Coal-tar-saturated burlap fabricshall be used with coal-tar base plying cements; typical ones are coal-tar pitches conforming to Specification D 450, or appropriate solvent-bearing bituminous materials.

Standard Test Method for Hydrostatic Pressure Resistance of a Liquid-Applied Waterproofing Membrane

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 This test method is used as a screening tool to determine the hydrostatic pressure to which a liquid-applied waterproofing membrane may be subjected without failing when stretched over a crack in the substrate. This test method discriminates between a membrane that is very resistant to hydrostatic pressure and one that is not. Because of the variability inherent in this test method, it is not recommended that this test method be used to set a numerical standard for hydrostatic pressure resistance. No prediction of durability at lower hydrostatic pressures can be made when using the results of this test method.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method describes a laboratory procedure for determining the resistance of a waterproofing membrane to hydrostatic pressure.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
3.1 Asphalt-based, solvent-type, fibered or nonfibered, aluminum-pigmented roof coatings are used as a protective coating for solar reflection to prolong the life of roofing materials or where decorative qualities are desired.  
3.2 Suitable application of aluminum-pigmented asphalt roof coatings is an important factor in achieving a successful long-term coating. 1.1 This guide covers the application methods for Specification D2824/D2824M Aluminum-Pigmented Asphalt Roof Coatings, Nonfibered, and Fibered without Asbestos, for application on asphalt built-up roof membranes, modified bitumen roof membranes, bituminous base flashings, concrete surfaces, metal surfaces, emulsion coatings, and solvent-based coatings. This guide does not apply to the selection of a specific aluminum-pigmented asphalt roof coating type for use on specific projects. The fibered version of these coatings excludes the use of asbestos fibers.

Standard Test Method for Failure End Point in Accelerated and Outdoor Weathering of Bituminous Materials

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 The extent of cracking or pitting of bituminous films is a measure of the extent of deterioration due to weathering. Failure due to cracking is more accurately determined electrically than visually.  
4.2 Failure determined by this test method will depend not only on the characteristics of the bituminous material and the extent of weathering, but also on the film thickness, and the amount and type of mineral filler present.  
4.3 Tests on a similar material of known weathering characteristics (a control) exposed at the same time as the test material is strongly recommended as a check on the validity of the test results.

This specification establishes the manufacturing process and physical requirements for wax-modified asphaltic products intended for built-up roof construction, construction of bituminous vapor retarder systems, adhering fleece-backed single-ply roof membranes, and adhering insulation boards used in various types of roof systems. The base asphalt shall be prepared from lightly oxidized petroleum asphalt, and the wax-modified asphalt shall incorporate one or more high melt-point synthetic waxes. The specification is intended for general classification purposes only, and does not imply restrictions on roofing system design, such as the slope at which this asphalt may be used.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 This test method measures the tendency for oil components to separate spontaneously from asphalt. The separation of oil components can cause staining in asphalt roofing products and adjacent materials in storage and use.  
4.2 The stain index is related to the thermal stability of the asphalt. Higher stain index values indicate lower stability and greater tendency for staining.  
4.3 Use this procedure to determine the staining tendency of asphalt and to compare the results against a material for which the staining tendency is known.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers the determination of the staining tendency of asphalt and the assignment of a stain index proportional to the extent of staining observed.  
1.2 This test method is applicable to asphalts having ring-and-ball softening points of 85 °C [185 °F] or greater.  
Note 1: This test method may be modified for use with other bituminous materials with softening points less than 85 °C [185 °F] by using a different temperature than specified in Section 7 by agreement of the interested parties. The report of results from such a test may cite this method but must clearly state the temperature employed in the exception and acknowledge that the interpretation of results in Section 9 and the precision and bias stated in Section 10 may not apply.
