SCOPE

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 This weathering apparatus is used for comparing the weathering characteristics of bituminous materials against a control material for which the outdoor weathering characteristics are known. It is not possible to establish a precise correlation between accelerated and natural weathering because (1) there are geographical climatic variations, local weather variations, and variations in local pollutants, and (2) the relation between accelerated and natural weathering is material dependent. Acceleration factors differ between materials as well as between formulations of the same material. Guide G141 provides guidance regarding this issue.
Note 1: This practice can be used for other than bituminous materials, but the significance and use have not been evaluated.

ABSTRACT
This specification establishes the material and manufacturing requirements for water-based asphalt emulsion (mineral colloid or chemically stabilized type) pavement sealers suitable for use as a weather-protective coating over bituminous pavements, such as roadways, driveways, and parking areas. The base asphalt emulsion shall be made using binders prepared from crude petroleum; the mineral filler (when used), shall consist of finely ground clay, silica, limestone, slate, basalt, slag, or other inert inorganic filler materials; and the aggregate shall be either a natural or manufactured angular aggregate composed of clean, hard, durable particles free of clay or other objectionable material. The aggregate to be used shall follow the manufacturer's recommendations; however, 100% of the aggregate shall pass a 2.38 mm [No. 8] mesh-sieve at all times. Aggregate may either be added at the point of manufacture, post-added at the job site, or both. The use of an additive is optional and shall be approved by the asphalt emulsion pavement sealer manufacturer.
This specification also covers the physical requirements, sampling, inspection, and packaging and package marking for asphalt emulsion pavement sealers (mineral colloid or chemically stabilized type).

4.1 Tests conducted according to this practice are used to compare the weathering characteristics of bituminous materials versus a control material of known outdoor durability. It is not possible to establish a single relationship that is applicable to all materials between time in accelerated tests conducted according to this practice and time in natural weathering because (1) there are geographical climatic variations, local weather variations, and variations in local pollutants, and (2) the relation between accelerated and natural weathering is material dependent with differences in acceleration factors between materials as well as for different formulations of the same material. Guide G141 provides guidance regarding variability in outdoor and accelerated weathering tests and about the use of control materials.  
Note 1: It is recommended that outdoor weathering be used to validate the laboratory accelerated test in terms of performance ranking.

5.1 Asphalt slabs compacted with the rolling compactor can be used to obtain specimens for further testing, including bulk specific gravity following Test Methods D1188/D1188M, D2726/D2726M, and D6752/D6752M, fatigue performance characteristics following Test Methods D7460 and D8237 or AASHTO T 321, and Hamburg wheel-track testing following AASHTO T 324.
