Overview
EN 622-3:2004 - Fibreboards: Specifications - Part 3: Requirements for medium boards (CEN) defines the product requirements and test criteria for medium-density fibreboards (medium boards) as referenced in EN 316. It is a member of the EN 622 series and supersedes EN 622-3:1997. The standard specifies property limits (product properties) but explicitly notes these are not characteristic values for structural design. Requirements are expressed as percentile limits based on EN 326-1 sampling and testing conventions.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and classification
- Covers medium boards for general purpose and load-bearing use, and for service conditions: dry, humid, exterior (service classes per ENV 1995-1-1 / EN 13986).
- Measured properties
- Swelling in thickness (EN 317) - 24 h immersion limits (95th percentile).
- Internal bond (EN 319) - adhesion strength perpendicular to panel plane.
- Bending strength and modulus of elasticity (EN 310) - applies in any in-plane direction.
- Moisture resistance - assessed by internal bond after boil test (EN 1087-1, modified by Annex B) or bending strength after boil test (modified procedure in Annex C). These are equivalent test alternatives.
- Performance criteria
- Values in the standard are to be met as 5th-percentile minima (except swelling uses 95th-percentile maxima), calculated from panel means.
- Test results are referenced to a material condition of 20 °C and 65% RH (except for swelling and boil-test derived measures where pre-treatment condition is specified).
- Conformity and quality control
- Verification of compliance via external control and factory production control (FPC) per EN 326 series.
- Marking rules, board type designations and optional colour coding for easy identification.
Practical applications and users
- Who uses EN 622-3:2004
- Fibreboard manufacturers, QA/QC laboratories, test laboratories, product certifiers, architects, specifiers, building product distributors, and standards bodies.
- Typical applications
- Interior fitments and furniture (general purpose boards), and building elements where medium boards are used as non-structural or light structural panels.
- For intended use in floors, walls or roofs, EN 12871 should also be consulted for additional performance requirements.
- Why it matters
- Ensures consistent product quality across Europe, supports specification and procurement, and provides harmonised test methods for bending strength, internal bond, swelling, and moisture resistance.

Properties not required for specific board types are marked “–“.
With the exception of swelling in thickness, internal bond after boil test (see Tables 7, 8) and bending strength
after boil test (see Tables 3, 4, 8), the values given in the Tables are characterised by a moisture content in the
material corresponding to a temperature of 20 °C and a relative humidity of 65 %. The values given for swelling
in thickness, internal bond after boil test and bending strength after boil test are characterised by a moisture
content in the material corresponding to a temperature of 20 °C and a relative humidity of 65 % before the

The standard EN 622-3:2004 provides a comprehensive framework for the specifications and requirements of medium boards, ensuring compliance with EN 316. Its focus on medium boards makes it a crucial reference for manufacturers and designers in the wood-based materials industry. The document clearly articulates the essential requirements that medium boards must meet, thereby promoting uniformity in product quality and performance. One of the strengths of the EN 622-3:2004 is its detailed outline of product properties, which aids users in understanding the characteristics and performance aspects of medium boards. By basing these specifications on the EN 316 standard, it reinforces the relevance of EN 622-3:2004 in the broader context of European standards for wood materials. Moreover, the standard emphasizes that the values provided are not characteristic values for design calculations, which mitigates potential misinterpretation that may arise during application. This clarification enhances the reliability of the document, as it helps stakeholders make informed decisions based on the correct application of the specifications. The relevance of EN 622-3:2004 is significant, particularly in a market that increasingly demands stringent quality benchmarks and standardized testing methodologies. As industry practices evolve and sustainability becomes a priority, this standard acts as a baseline for developing medium boards that are not only compliant but also environmentally responsible. In summary, EN 622-3:2004 stands out due to its clear definition of requirements tailored for medium boards, thereby establishing a vital resource that supports quality assurance and consistency in manufacturing practices across the European market.
