Overview

The EN ISO 8654:2018/A1:2019 amendment updates the international standard for Jewellery - Colours of gold alloys, focusing on the precise definition, range of colours, and designation protocols for gold alloys used in jewellery. This amendment, issued by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), aligns with ISO 8654:2018/Amd 1:2019 and extends the colour measurement methodology to include the 10° standard observer, enhancing accuracy and industry applicability.

Gold alloy colours are vital in jewellery manufacturing and evaluation, impacting quality control, product consistency, and consumer expectations. This standard amendment ensures harmonized colour measurement techniques and nomenclature, promoting international trade and quality assurance in precious metal jewellery.

Key Topics

  • Colour Definition and Range
Specifies the colour parameters for gold alloys, defining nominal values and tolerance limits to ensure consistent appearance.

  • Colour Measurement Methods
Incorporates measurement protocols using two standard observers:

    • The existing 2° standard observer
    • Newly added 10° standard observer setup, widely used for colour evaluation in the industry.
  • Spectrophotometer Setup
Describes the technical setup for colour measurement instruments, with specific focus on the parameters for the 10° standard observer, ensuring precise chromaticity data.

  • Chromaticity Coordinates and Colour Values
Provides detailed tables for nominal values and tolerance ranges for:

    • xyY colour space
    • Lab* colour space
    • LCh° colour space
These are crucial for consistent and replicable measurement of gold alloy colours.
  • Designation of Gold Alloy Colours
Standardizes the naming and classification of various gold alloy colours to avoid ambiguity in commercial and manufacturing contexts.

Applications

  • Jewellery Manufacturing
Enables manufacturers to monitor and control the exact colour of gold alloys, contributing to product uniformity and customer satisfaction.

  • Quality Assurance
Provides guidelines for inspection and certification laboratories to assess compliance of gold alloy colours with market requirements.

  • Research and Development
Supports metallurgists and material scientists in developing new gold alloys with specific colour characteristics.

  • Retail and Consumer Communication
Assists in the accurate description and designation of jewellery items, aiding marketing and consumer transparency.

  • International Trade Compliance
Harmonizes colour standards across member countries to reduce trade barriers and enhance product compatibility globally.

Related Standards

  • ISO 8654:2018 – Jewellery - Colours of gold alloys - Definition, range of colours and designation (Base Standard)
  • EN ISO 8654:2018 – European adoption of the ISO jewellery colour standard
  • ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1 and 2 – Standards development and editorial guidelines
  • Other ISO standards on precious metals and jewellery for material specifications and testing methods

This amendment reaffirms the commitment to international harmonization of jewellery standards, focusing on scientifically defined colour metrics for gold alloys. It benefits manufacturers, certifiers, and consumers by adding a broader colour measurement scope with the 10° standard observer, facilitating enhanced accuracy in colour evaluation and classification across the jewellery industry.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
