1.1 Product definition This document contains the initial, start of life dimensional, optical, mechanical and environmental performance requirements, which single mode mechanical splice needs to meet in order for it to be categorized as a European standard product. Although, in this document, the product is qualified for EN IEC 60793 2 50 type B-652.D single mode fibres, it is also suitable for mechanical splicing of other single mode fibres with 125 µm diameter glass cladding. Also mechanical splices designed for connections of buffered or secondary coated fibres and cords according to EN 60794 2 50:2008 are covered by this document. 1.2 Interoperability The installed mechanical splice fits into optical fibre management system with optical splice cassettes or splice trays as defined in EN IEC 61756 1. This document specifies the following two physical interface dimensions: - cross sectional profile with width, height or diameter (in millimetres); - length (in millimetres). 1.3 Expected performance In this document, the performance of the mechanical splice is given with identical fibres only as specified in Annex A. Losses associated with tolerances in fibre cladding diameter and mode field mismatch are not taken into account. The measured attenuation is a function of the core concentricity, cladding non-circularity and alignment capability. The optical return loss performance is a function of the index matching gel and the fibre end face preparation. 1.4 Operating environment The tests selected combined with the severities and durations are representative of an outdoor enclosed environment defined as category OP in EN IEC 61753 1. To ensure that the product can be used in outdoor closures, boxes or street cabinets for categories A, G or S (as defined in EN IEC 61753 1) the specified lower temperature is extended to −40 °C and a water immersion requirement for temporary flooding conditions has been added. 1.5 Reliability Whilst the anticipated service life expectancy of the product in this environment is at least 20 years, compliance with this document does not guarantee the reliability of the product. This is expected to be predicted using a recognized reliability assessment programme. 1.6 Quality assurance Compliance with this document does not guarantee the manufacturing consistency of the product. This is expected to be maintained using a recognized quality assurance programme.

IEC 61300-3-4:2023 is available as IEC 61300-3-4:2023 RLV which contains the International Standard and its Redline version, showing all changes of the technical content compared to the previous edition.IEC 61300-3-4: 2022 describes the various methods available to measure the attenuation of optical components. It is not, however, applicable to random mate attenuation measurements as described in IEC 61300-3-34 and IEC 61300-3-45 nor for attenuation measurements of dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) devices as described in IEC 61300-3-29. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2012. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) addition of Clause 3 containing terms, definitions and abbreviated terms; b) addition of a new LSPM measurement method, insertion method (D); c) addition of Annex A describing attenuation measurement of multicore fibre; d) changed reference test method to insertion C and alternative test method to substitution or insertion D for power meter and type 4 DUT.

This part of IEC 61300 details a procedure to determine the suitability of a fibre optic interconnecting device, passive component, splices or closure to withstand the environmental condition of extended high temperature that occur during operation, storage and/or transport. The test is intended to indicate the performance of such devices when exposed to heat of constant temperature over a given period. In general terms, this test provides a high temperature to induce potential failures due to softening and expansions. This procedure does not assess the ability of a device to operate during temperature variations; in this case, IEC 61300-2-22 is used.

This part of IEC 61300 evaluates the effects of vibration on fibre optic devices at the predominant frequency ranges and magnitudes that are encountered during field service on attenuation. NOTE Most vibrations encountered in service are not of a simple harmonic nature. However, it has been shown that tests based on vibrations of this type are satisfactory to simulating actual service.

IEC 61300-3-35:2022 is concerned with the observation and classification of debris, scratches and defects. The inspection requirements are based on IEC TR 62627-05. Advice for cleaning of contamination from fibres/ferrule is found in IEC TR 62627-01 and a recommendation is given in Annex D. IEC TR 62572-4 provides the cleaning method for a stub for optical transceivers. Visual inspection is in addition to, and does not replace measurement of performance parameters such as attenuation and return loss, or end face parameters. The dimensions specified are chosen such that they can be easily estimated. Not only the zones A and B on the fibre are inspected for defects and scratches but the whole contact area (where the two fibres/ferrules meet when mated) needs to be inspected for contamination (this is up to 250 µm diameter for cylindrical ferrules and the whole ferrule surface for rectangular ferrules). The objectives of this document are the following: - specify the minimum criteria for a microscope to be compliant to this document; - specify the procedure and criteria for inspecting fibre-optic end faces for cleanliness to determine if the end faces are fit for use. All connector optical interfaces (IEC 61755 series and IEC 63267 series) are based on physical contact between fibre cores; - provide quantitative criteria for the analysis of end face images. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2015. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - adding of a statement that visual inspection is not a substitute for optical qualification such as attenuation and return loss measurement; - adding of some terms and definitions; - adding requirements for SM 35 dB connectors; - adding of a sentence in Clause 5 concerning the susceptibility of the methods to system variability and variability within systems from same supplier; - removal of inspection requirements for zones C and D; - insertion of a generic cleanliness specification for whole rectangular ferrule and 250 µm area around every fibre; - adding a cleaning recommendation for rectangular and cylindrical ferrules; - outer edge of inspection zone B has changed from 115 µm to 110 µm to meet manufacturing tolerances of fixture for microscopes; - change that defects that are partly in core are only to be judged for the part they are in the core. The remainder of the defect is considered to be located in the cladding. - adding a statement that a connector cannot be rejected by just failing visual inspection. Meeting the specified optical performance determines the use of this connector.

IEC 61755-2-2:2022 defines a set of prescribed conditions for a single-mode fibre optic connection that is maintained in order to satisfy the requirements of attenuation and return loss (RL) performance in a randomly mated pair of angled polished physically contacting (APC) fibres. The model uses a Gaussian distribution of light intensity over the specified mode field diameter (MFD) for determination of attenuation performance grades, based on MFD mismatch and the amount of lateral and angular fibre core offsets. Attenuation and RL performance grades are defined in IEC 61755-1. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2006. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - addition of normative references and visual requirements; - reconsideration of the whole parts of the text to avoid misuse of the standard.

This part of IEC 61755 covers dispersion unshifted single-mode fibre optic connection interfaces. It includes references, document structure details, definitions, and standardised optical connection grades. The grades are based on random mated connections between two optical connector populations according to prescribed characteristics including fibre mode field diameter (MFD) mismatch. It also defines standardized test methods where appropriate.
