FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with

1 Scope
This part of IEC 63522 is used for testing along with the appropriate severities and conditions
for measurements and tests designed to assess the ability of DUTs to perform under expected
conditions of transportation, storage and all aspects of operational use.
This document defines a standard test method for mechanical endurance.

4 Test procedure
4.1 Purpose
The test determines the mechanical performance of relays under specified energization
conditions over an extended number of cycles.
NOTE The mechanical endurance is unrelated to electrical endurance. However, performed electrical endurance
can be assessed as a mechanical endurance.
4.2 Procedure
4.2.1 General
The relay shall be energized with the rated coil voltage or an appropriate value within the rated
coil voltage range or operative range and the test shall be conducted at ambient room
temperature or as otherwise specified.
Unless otherwise specified, the mechanical endurance shall be performed with nominal coil
voltage.
For alternate current coil driven relays, the switching action shall not be synchronous with the
source of the monitoring circuit. The frequency of operation shall be as specified; the relay shall
attain both the operate and release/reset condition within one cycle. However, the frequency of
operations shall be less than the maximum frequency of operation according to IEC 63522-45,
if not otherwise specified by a detailed specification or the manufacturer.
It is good practice that the chosen contact load should ensure reliable monitoring of the
performed cycle, whilst not causing a level of wear of the contact points that might devalue the
test. It is recommended to use a load within CC0 or CC1 category.
4.2.2 Method 1: Continuous checking
4.2.2.1 With contact load monitoring
The mechanical operation of the relay shall be monitored electrically, using a contact load as
specified. The contact load chosen shall ensure reliable monitoring of the performed cycles,
while not causing a level of wear of the contact points that might devalue the test.
It is permitted that all the contacts of the same type of the relay are connected in parallel, or as
specified by the relevant standards or the manufacturer.
NOTE It is possible to gather more information on the single contact monitoring for product development reasons.
This is up to the manufacturer.
4.2.2.2 With other monitoring means
It is permitted to use other monitoring methods such as the coil current curve or sensors.
Reliable monitoring of the performed cycle shall be ensured.
4.2.3 Method 2: Intermediate checking
Intermediate checking shall be made as specified by the manufacturer, but at least at each 20%
of the specified mechanical endurance.

4.3 Conditions to be specified
The valid influence quantities shall be in accordance with IEC 63522-0:–, 4.4.
The conditions to be specified are the following:
a) method 1 or 2;
b) mounting conditions;
c) energization value;
