Foreword
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). The work
of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through IS0
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be
represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. IS0
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 YO of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard IS0 7792-1 was prepared by Technical Committee
iSO/TC 61, Plastics, Subcommittee SC 9, Thermoplastic materials.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition
(IS0 7792-1 :I9851 and includes the following changes:
The tensile modulus of elasticity has been included as a second
designatory property and the text has been brought into accordance with
the revised frame text for designation standards.

Designation system and basis for specifications
1 Scope
1.1 This part of IS0 7792 establishes a system of designation for poly(alkylene terephthalate) thermoplastic
material, which may be used as the basis for specifications.
1.2 The types of poly(alky1ene terephthalate) plastic are differentiated from each other by a classification system
based on appropriate levels of the designatory properties
a) viscosity number
b) tensile modulus of elasticity
and on information about the intended application and/or method of processing, important properties, additives,
colorants, fillers and reinforcing materials.
1.3 This part of IS0 7792 is applicable to poly(ethy1ene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(buty1ene terephthalate)
e (PBT).
It applies to materials ready for normal use in the form of powder, granules or pellets, unmodified or modified by
colorants, additives, fillers, etc.
1.4 It is not intended to imply that materials having the same designation give necessarily the same perform-
ance. This part of IS0 7792 does not provide engineering data, performance data or data on processing conditions
which may be required to specify a material for a particular application and/or method of processing.
If such additional properties are required, they shall be determined in accordance with the test methods specified
in part 2 of this International Standard, if suitable.
1.5 This basis for specifications may be used to prepare specifications related to well defined applications. These
specifications will use data blocks 1 to 4 and, if necessary, data block 5 as a complement, the last-mentioned data
block containing the specific requirements in relation to the application.

3 Designation system
The designation system for thermoplastics is based on the following standardized pattern:

The designation consists of an optional description block, reading "Thermoplastics", and an identity block com-
prising the International Standard number and an individual-item block. For unambiguous designation, the
individual-item block is subdivided into 5 data blocks comprising the following information:

- Data block 1:
Identification of the plastic by its symbol PET or PBT in accordance with IS0 1043-1
(see 3.1).
- Data block 2: Position 1 : Intended application or method of processing (see 3.2).
Positions 2 to 8: Important properties, additives and supplementary information (see
3.2).
- Data block 3: Designatory properties (see 3.3).
- Data block 4:
Fillers or reinforcing materials and their nominal content (see 3.4).
- Data block 5: Information required for specification purposes. The use of data block 5 converts the
designation to a specification. Only information listed in data block 5 becomes part of
the specification requirements.
The first character of the individual-item block shall be a hyphen. The data blocks shall be separated from each
other by commas.
If a data block is not used, this shall be indicated by doubling the separation sign, i.e. by two commas (,,).

3.1 Data block 1
In this data block, after the hyphen, poly(alky1ene terephthalate) plastics are identified using the symbols "PET"
or "PBT" in accordance with IS0 1043-1.
3.2 Data block 2
In this data block, information about intended application and/or method of processing is given in position 1 and
information about important properties, additives and colour in positions 2 to 8. The code-letters used are specified
in table 1.
If information is presented in positions 2 to 8 and no specific information is given in position 1, the letter X shall
be inserted in position 1.

L'ISO (Organisation internationale de normalisation) est une fédération

1 Domaine d'application
1.1 I'ISO 7792 établit un système de désignation des matériaux thermoplastiques
La présente partie de
poly(alky1ène téréphtalates) qui peut être utilisé comme base pour les spécifications.
1.2 Les types de plastiques poly(alky1ène téréphtalates) sont différenciés les uns des autres par un système de
classification basé sur des niveaux appropriés des propriétés de désignation:
a) indice de viscosité;
b) module d'élasticité en traction;
et sur des informations concernant l'application prévue et/ou la méthode de mise en œuvre, les propriétés im-
portantes, les additifs, colorants, matériaux de charge et renforts.

1.3 La présente partie de I'ISO 7792 est applicable au poly(éthy1ène téréphtalate) (PET) et au poly(butylène té-
réphtalate) (PBT).
Elle s'applique aux matériaux prêts à l'emploi SOUS forme de poudres, grains ou granulés, non modifiés ou modifiés
par des colorants, additifs, charges etc.

1.4 Le fait que des matériaux aient la même désignation n'implique pas qu'ils présentent nécessairement les
mêmes performances. La présente partie de I'ISO 7792 ne comporte pas de données sur la conception, la per-
formance ou les conditions de mise en œuvre qui peuvent être exigées pour spécifier un matériau pour une ap-
plication et/ou une méthode de mise en œuvre particulière.
Si de telles caractéristiques additionnelles sont nécessaires, elles doivent être déterminées conformément aux
méthodes d'essai prescrites dans I'ISO 7792-2, si appropriée.
1.5 Cette base peut être utilisée pour élaborer des spécifications se rapportant à des applications bien définies.
Ces spécifications utiliseront les blocs de données 1 à 4 et, si nécessaire, le bloc de données 5 à titre complé-
mentaire, ce dernier bloc de données contenant les prescriptions spécifiques liées à l'application.

La désignation consiste en un bloc descripteur facultatif, lire ((Thermoplastique)) et un bloc d'identité comprenant
le numéro de la Norme internationale et un bloc ((objet particulier)). Pour une désignation non ambiguë, le bloc
((objet particulier)) est subdivisé en 5 blocs de données, comprenant les informations suivantes:
- Bloc de données 1 : Identification du plastique par son symbole PET ou PBT conformément à I'ISO 1043-1
(voir 3.1).
- Bloc de données 2: Position 1 : application prévue ou méthode de mise en œuvre (voir 3.2).
Positions 2 à 8: propriétés importantes, additifs et informations supplémentaires (voir
3.2).
- Bloc de données 3: Propriétés de désignation (voir 3.3).
- Bloc de données 4: Charges ou matières de renforcement et leur teneur nominale (voir 3.4).
- Bloc de données 5: II énumère les informations requises pour les besoins de la Spécification. L'utilisation
du bloc de données 5 transforme la désignation en une spécification. Seules, les in-
formations données dans le bloc de données 5 deviennent partie intégrante des
prescriptions relatives aux spécifications.

Le premier caractère du bloc ((objet particulier)) doit être un tiret. Les blocs de données doivent être séparés les
uns des autres par des virgules.
Un bloc de données non utilisé doit être indiqué en doublant le signe de séparation, c'est-à-dire par deux virgules
