Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) and IEC (the International Electrotechnical Commission)
form the specialized system for worldwide standardization. National bodies that are members of ISO or IEC
participate in the development of International Standards through technical committees established by the
respective organization to deal with particular fields of technical activity. ISO and IEC technical committees
collaborate in fields of mutual interest. Other international organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO and IEC, also take part in the work.
In the field of information technology, ISO and IEC have established a joint technical committee, ISO/IEC JTC 1.
Draft International Standards adopted by the joint technical committee are circulated to national bodies for voting.

ISO/IEC 7816 is one of a series of standards describing the parameters for identification cards as defined in
ISO/IEC 7810 and the use of such cards for international interchange.

Physical characteristics
1 Scope
This part of ISO/IEC 7816 specifies the physical characteristics of integrated circuit(s) cards with contacts. It applies
to identification cards of the ID-1 card type which may include embossing and/or a magnetic stripe as specified in
ISO/IEC 7811-1 to ISO/IEC 7811-6.
This part of ISO/IEC 7816 applies to cards which have a physical interface with electrical contacts. It does not,
however, define the nature, number and position of the integrated circuits in the cards.
NOTE Other types of IC cards, formats or interfaces may be developed in the future which will call for additions to be made
to this part of ISO/IEC 7816 or will result in the need for other International Standards to be prepared.

Avant-propos
L'ISO (Organisation internationale de normalisation) et la CEI (Commission électrotechnique internationale) forment
ensemble un système consacré à la normalisation internationale considérée comme un tout. Les organismes
nationaux membres de l'ISO ou de la CEI participent au développement de Normes internationales par
l'intermédiaire des comités techniques créés par l'organisation concernée afin de s'occuper des différents domaines
particuliers de l'activité technique. Les comités techniques de l'ISO et de la CEI collaborent dans des domaines

1 Domaine d’application
La présente partie de l'ISO/CEI 7816 spécifie les caractéristiques physiques des cartes à circuit(s) intégré(s) à
contacts. Elle s'applique aux cartes d'identification du type ID-1 qui peuvent comprendre un estampage et/ou des
pistes magnétiques, tels que cela est spécifié dans l'ISO/CEI 7811-1 à l’ISO/CEI 7811-6.
La présente partie de l'ISO/CEI 7816 s'applique aux cartes ayant une interface physique par des contacts
électriques. Elle ne définit cependant pas la nature, le nombre et la position des circuits intégrés dans les cartes.
NOTE Il se peut que d'autres types de cartes à circuit(s) intégré(s), de formats ou d'interfaces soient développés à l'avenir,
ce qui entraînera des additifs à la présente partie de l'ISO/CEI 7816 ou rendront nécessaire l'élaboration d'autres Normes
internationales.
