Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this part of ISO 15023 may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard ISO 15023-1 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 61, Plastics, Subcommittee

1 Scope
1.1 This part of ISO 15023 establishes a system of designation for poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVAL) materials which may
be used as the basis for specifications.
1.2 The types of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVAL) materials are differentiated from each other by a classification system
based on the designatory properties:
a) degree of hydrolysis
b) viscosity of aqueous solution under defined conditions
and on information about basic polymer parameters, intended application and/or method of processing, important
properties, additives, colorants, fillers and reinforcing materials.
1.3 This part of ISO 15023 is applicable to poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVAL) materials with a degree of hydrolysis not less
than 70 mol%.
It applies to materials ready for normal use in the form of powder, granules or pellets, and to materials unmodified or
modified by colorants, additives, fillers, etc.
1.4 It is not intended to imply that materials having the same designation give necessarily the same performance.
This part of ISO 15023 does not provide engineering data, performance data or data on processing conditions which
may be required to specify a material for a particular application and/or method of processing.
If such additional properties are required, they shall be determined in accordance with the test methods described in
ISO 15023-2, as appropriate.
1.5 In order to specify a material for a particular application or to ensure reproducible processing, additional
requirements may be given in data block 5 (see 3.1).
2 Normative references
The following normative documents contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of
this part of ISO 15023. For dated references, subsequent amendments to, or revisions of, any of these publications
do not apply. However, parties to agreements based on this part of ISO 15023 are encouraged to investigate the
possibility of applying the most recent editions of the normative documents indicated below. For undated references,
the latest edition of the normative document referred to applies. Members of ISO and IEC maintain registers of
currently valid International Standards.

L'ISO (Organisation internationale de normalisation) est une fédération mondiale d'organismes nationaux de norma-
lisation (comités membres de l'ISO). L'élaboration des Normes internationales est en général confiée aux comités
techniques de l'ISO. Chaque comité membre intéressé par une étude a le droit de faire partie du comité technique
créé à cet effet. Les organisations internationales, gouvernementales et non gouvernementales, en liaison avec
l'ISO participent également aux travaux. L'ISO collabore étroitement avec la Commission électrotechnique interna-
tionale (CEI) en ce qui concerne la normalisation électrotechnique.

1 Domaine d'application
1.1 La présente partie de l'ISO 15023 établit un système de désignation des matériaux en poly(alcool de vinyle)
(PVAL) qui peut être utilisé comme base pour les spécifications.
1.2 Les types de matériaux en poly(alcool de vinyle) (PVAL) sont différenciés les uns des autres par un système de
classification basé sur les propriétés de désignation:
a) degré d'hydrolyse
b) viscosité de la solution aqueuse dans des conditions définies
et sur des informations concernant les paramètres relatifs au polymère de base, l'application et/ou la méthode de
mise en œuvre prévue(s), les propriétés importantes, les additifs, les colorants, les charges et les matériaux de
renfort.
1.3 La présente partie de l'ISO 15023 est applicable aux matériaux en poly(alcool de vinyle) (PVAL) dont le degré
d'hydrolyse n'est pas inférieur à 70 mol%. Elle s'applique aux matériaux prêts à l'emploi sous forme de poudre,
granulés ou pastilles, et aux matériaux non modifiés ou modifiés par des colorants, additifs, charges etc.
1.4 Le fait que des matériaux aient la même désignation n'implique pas qu'ils présentent nécessairement les
mêmes performances. La présente partie de l'ISO 15023 ne comporte pas de données sur la conception, les
performances ou les conditions de mise en œuvre qui peuvent être exigées pour spécifier un matériau pour une
application et/ou une méthode de mise en œuvre particulière.
Si de telles caractéristiques supplémentaires sont nécessaires, elles doivent être déterminées conformément aux
méthodes d'essai décrites dans l’ISO 15023-2, le cas échéant.
1.5 Pour prescrire un matériau pour une application particulière ou garantir une mise en œuvre reproductible, des
exigences additionnelles peuvent être codées dans le bloc de données 5 (voir 3.1).
2 Références normatives
Les documents normatifs suivants contiennent des dispositions qui, par suite de la référence qui y est faite,
constituent des dispositions valables pour la présente partie de l'ISO 15023. Pour les références datées, les
amendements ultérieurs ou les révisions de ces publications ne s'appliquent pas. Toutefois, les parties prenantes
aux accords fondés sur la présente partie de l'ISO 15023 sont invitées à rechercher la possibilité d'appliquer les
éditions les plus récentes des documents normatifs indiqués ci-après. Pour les références non datées, la dernière
édition du document normatif en référence s'applique. Les membres de l'ISO et de la CEI possèdent le registre des
