Overview

ISO 5722:2023 specifies a laboratory test method for determining tensile and shear creep of ceramic adhesive in fine/advanced ceramics at ambient temperature. The standard defines specimen preparation, test fixtures and apparatus, measurement and recording procedures, creep calculations and required test reporting. It is intended for evaluating time-dependent deformation (creep strain) and creep rupture time of adhesive layers used in ceramic–ceramic, ceramic–metal and ceramic–glass joints.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Test principle: Apply a constant uniaxial tensile or shear load to a cross-bonded sample so the adhesive layer experiences uniform stress; record displacement versus time to determine creep strain and rupture time.
  • Specimen geometry: Rectangular bars (recommended section 10 mm × 10 mm, length > 30 mm) joined orthogonally to form a cross-bonded sample; adhesive layer thickness shall be > 1 mm.
  • Measurement accuracy: Linear dimension devices should have resolution of 0.01 mm (ISO 3611); deformation (creep) measurement resolution 0.001 mm or finer. Continuous or sufficiently frequent displacement-time recording is required.
  • Apparatus and fixtures: Creep testing machine must provide uniform, constant tensile/shear loads and meet verification per ISO 7500-2. Test fixtures should be made of hard metal with high elastic modulus and hardness (as specified in the standard).
  • Loading procedure and limits: Interfacial strength tests are performed first; creep load shall not exceed 80% of the measured interface strength.
  • Data and calculations: Standard provides formulas and procedures to calculate applied load, tensile creep strain and shear creep strain from measured displacements, cross-bonded area and initial adhesive thickness. Record rupture (fracture) time when applicable.
  • Reporting: Test reports must reference ISO 5722:2023 and include laboratory identification, test dates, specimen details, test conditions, displacement–time curves, calculated creep data and rupture times.

Applications and users

ISO 5722 is valuable for:

  • Materials researchers characterizing time-dependent behavior of ceramic adhesives and interfacial layers.
  • Quality control and acceptance testing in manufacturers of advanced ceramics, ceramic assemblies, and bonded components.
  • Design engineers generating data for lifetime predictions and reliability assessments of ceramic joints under sustained loads.
  • Test laboratories performing standardized creep testing and certification.

1 Scope
This document specifies a testing method for determining the tensile and shear creep of ceramic
adhesive at ambient temperature by tensile and shear tests on cross-bonded test specimens. Procedures
for test piece preparation, test modes, data collection, creep calculations and reporting are addressed.
This document is applicable primarily to ceramic materials which are used for ceramic-ceramic,
ceramic-metal and ceramic-glass joining, including monolithic fine ceramics and whisker- or
particulate-reinforced ceramic composites. This test method can be used for material research, quality
control, characterization and design data generation purposes.
