Animal and vegetable fats and oils — Determination of polyethylene-type polymers

This International Standard specifies the reference method for the determination of polyethylene-type polymers in animal and vegetable fats and oils. It has been established that below 50 mg of polymers per kilogram the precision of the method is insufficient (see the results for tallow 1 in Table A.1). This method is used for animal fats and oils in particular.

La présente Norme internationale décrit la méthode de référence pour le dosage des polymères de type polyéthylène dans les corps gras d'origines animales et végétale. En dessous de 50mg de polymères par kilogramme, la fidélité de la méthode est notoirement insuffisante (voir les résultats du suif 1 au Tableau A.1). Cette méthode est utilisée en particulier avec les corps gras d'origine animale.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO

Introduction
The presence of polyethene-type polymers, which originate from packaging materials, can cause serious difficulties
in the processing of fats, as they can lead to deposits and blockages in pipes, valves, etc. In the manufacturer of
soap, they may lead to the appearance of fibre marbling and undesirable specks.

WARNING — The method described in this International Standard requires the use of chloroform and
tetrachloroethylene. These are toxic and ozone-depleting substances. Avoid inhalation of and exposure to
these solvents. Work in a fume cupboard when handling these solvents and solutions thereof.
1 Scope
This International Standard specifies the reference method for the determination of polyethylene-type polymers in
animal and vegetable fats and oils.
It has been established that below 50 mg of polymers per kilogram the precision of the method is insufficient (see the

Introduction
La présence de polymères de type polyéthylène, ayant pour origine les matériaux d’emballage, peut entraîner de
graves ennuis lors du traitement des matières grasses, car ceux-ci peuvent conduire à des dépôts et des colmatages
des filtres, des blocages des vannes, etc. Ils peuvent également conduire à l’apparition de petis grains colorés en
savonnerie.

AVERTISSEMENT —La méthode décrite dans la présente Norme internationale nécessite l’emploi de
chloroforme et de tétrachloréthylène. Ces substances sont toxiques et contribuent à la diminution de
l’ozone. Éviter l’inhalation de, et l’exposition à, ces solvants. Travailler sous hotte ventilée lors de la
manipulation de ces solvants et de leurs solutions.
