REDLINE ISO/FDIS 25662 - Traditional Chinese medicine — Leonurus japonicus herb
Overview
ISO 25662: Traditional Chinese Medicine - Leonurus japonicus Herb is an international standard developed by ISO for the quality and testing of Leonurus japonicus herb, commonly known as Chinese motherwort or "Yimucao." This standard establishes minimum requirements and specifies standardized test methods for the dried aerial parts of Leonurus japonicus Houtt. used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It applies to materials traded globally, including both raw herbal forms (materia medica) and decoction pieces derived from this widely-used medicinal plant.
By harmonizing requirements across countries, ISO 25662 supports the safe and effective international trade of Leonurus japonicus herb. It provides guidance to farmers, manufacturers, importers, exporters, regulatory authorities, and healthcare professionals to ensure product authenticity, quality, and safety.
Key Topics
Quality and Safety Requirements
ISO 25662 details critical parameters for Leonurus japonicus herb, including:- Cleanliness and absence of foreign matter
- Morphological features, such as color and texture
- Microscopic structure for plant authentication
- Moisture limits to ensure proper drying and prevent spoilage
- Total and acid-insoluble ash content for purity assessment
- Acceptable maximum levels for heavy metals (arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury)
- Pesticide residues in accordance with international safety guidelines
- Measurement of water-soluble extractives
- Quantification of marker compounds (stachydrine hydrochloride, leonurine hydrochloride) for quality verification
Testing and Identification Methods
The standard prescribes:- Macroscopic and microscopic identification
- Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) for species authentication
- Reference methods for moisture, ash, heavy metals, and extractive content
- High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for marker compound determination
Packaging, Storage, and Labelling
Guidelines ensure product protection and traceability:- Odour-neutral, safe packaging
- Controlled storage to prevent contamination and degradation
- Transport conditions to maintain quality
- Labelling requirements, including product identity, net mass, origin, batch details, and specific quality features
Sampling and Reporting
Standardized procedures for sampling and reporting support regulatory compliance and traceability in international trade.
Applications
ISO 25662 has wide practical relevance across the herbal medicine supply chain:
- Manufacturers apply the standard to control and verify the quality of Leonurus japonicus raw materials and processed products, ensuring international acceptability.
- Traders and exporters use ISO 25662 to demonstrate compliance with global quality and safety parameters, facilitating smoother cross-border transactions.
- Regulatory authorities employ this standard as a basis for inspection, market surveillance, and import/export certification.
- Pharmacies and healthcare practitioners gain confidence in the safety, efficacy, and authenticity of the herbal product being dispensed or prescribed.
- Consumers benefit from improved transparency, consistent quality, and reduced risk of contaminants in herbal products.
Related Standards
ISO 25662 references and complements several other important standards in the field of herbal and traditional Chinese medicine:
- ISO 18664: Determination of heavy metals in herbal medicines used in TCM
- ISO 19609-2: Identity testing of herbal constituents
- ISO/TS 21310: Microscopic examination of medicinal herbs
- ISO 21371: Labelling requirements for products intended for oral or topical use
- ISO 22217: Storage requirements for raw materials and decoction pieces
- ISO 22258: Determination of pesticide residues in natural products by gas chromatography
- ISO 23723: General requirements for herbal raw material and materia medica
Adhering to ISO 25662 in combination with these related standards enables a consistent, safe, and internationally recognized approach to the management of Leonurus japonicus herb in the global herbal medicine industry.
