Overview
ISO 8764-2:2004 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies the general requirements, blade lengths, and marking conventions for hand-operated screwdrivers designed for cross-recessed head screws. This standard applies specifically to screwdrivers for H and Z types of cross-recessed screws as defined in ISO 4757. The document complements ISO 8764-1, which defines the specifications for the screwdriver blade tips.
Key aspects covered by ISO 8764-2:2004 ensure that screwdrivers used for assembly tasks involving cross-recessed screws maintain quality, safety, and interchangeability. This facilitates better compatibility and user experience in various industrial, manufacturing, and maintenance applications.
Key Topics
General Requirements: The standard mandates that screwdriver handles and blades must be made from materials that ensure reliability and safe operation under normal conditions. Surfaces of the handle and blade should be smooth and free from defects that could cause injury or reduce tool performance.
Blade Lengths: ISO 8764-2 defines two series of blade lengths for screwdrivers, tailored to different tip sizes for both PH (Phillips) and PZ (Pozidriv) forms. Blade lengths range from 25 mm up to 200 mm, allowing users to select the appropriate screwdriver size based on the application. The standard provides guidance to manufacturers on preferred and non-preferred dimensions.
Marking Requirements: Each screwdriver must be clearly and indelibly marked with the tip form (PH or PZ), tip size, and the trademark. The marking must remain legible throughout the normal working life of the tool. Although marking the blade length is optional, if displayed, it must correspond accurately to the nominal values in the standard.
Designation System: The standard provides a clear system for designating screwdrivers based on series (A or B), tip form, and size to ensure consistent identification.
Applications
ISO 8764-2:2004 plays a crucial role in ensuring quality and interoperability of hand-operated screwdrivers for cross-recessed head screws across various fields:
Manufacturing and Assembly Lines: Standardized screwdrivers help maintain consistency and precision in industrial assembly processes involving fasteners with cross-recessed heads.
Maintenance and Repair: Technicians use ISO-compliant screwdrivers to ensure proper fit and torque application, reducing the risk of screw damage or tool slippage during repair operations.
Tool Production: Manufacturers rely on this standard to design and produce screwdrivers that meet international expectations for size, marking, and safety features.
Quality Control: Organizations implement requirements from ISO 8764-2 as part of their quality assurance protocols to ensure all hand tools meet global benchmarks.
Related Standards
ISO 8764-1: Specifies the detailed design and dimensions of screwdriver tips for cross-recessed head screws, complementing the blade requirements of ISO 8764-2.
ISO 4757: Defines the types and dimensions of cross recesses for screws, including the H and Z forms referenced in ISO 8764-2.
ISO 272: Covers hexagon product measurements, relevant when screwdrivers have hexagonal drivers near the handle for enhanced torque application.
ISO 4759-1: Details tolerances for fasteners, which align with the hexagonal driver dimensions specified in ISO 8764-2.
ISO 1703: Provides nomenclature for assembly tools for screws and nuts, including cross-recessed screwdrivers.
Conclusion
ISO 8764-2:2004 is essential for ensuring high-quality, safe, and consistent hand-operated screwdrivers used with cross-recessed head screws. By standardizing general requirements, blade lengths, and marking methods, this standard supports manufacturers, distributors, and end-users in maintaining uniformity and reliability in screwdriving tools. Adherence to ISO 8764-2 facilitates efficient assembly operations and helps prevent tool and fastener damage, driving improved productivity and tool traceability worldwide.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.

Avant-propos
votants.
