Overview
ISO 9655:2004 is an international standard developed by ISO that specifies the principal dimensions of single-purpose pliers used in the electronics industry for gripping and manipulating tasks. This standard ensures uniformity in tool dimensions, facilitating interoperability, quality control, and ergonomic design. ISO 9655:2004 is part of a series of standards, with complementary documents ISO 9656:2004 detailing test methods for proper functioning, and ISO 9657:2004 outlining general technical requirements.
The standard covers various types of single-purpose pliers commonly used for precision work in electronics assembly, repair, and manufacturing, ensuring they meet strict size and design criteria. It supports manufacturers in producing standardized tools and assists users in selecting reliable and compatible pliers for their specific electronic applications.
Key Topics
Types of Pliers Covered:
ISO 9655:2004 focuses specifically on three main types of single-purpose pliers designed for gripping and manipulating small electronic components:- Round nose pliers
- Flat nose pliers
- Snipe nose pliers
Principal Dimensions:
The standard defines precise dimensional requirements for each plier type, including lengths of jaws, widths, thicknesses, and other critical measurements. These dimensions are outlined in detailed tables and drawings to ensure clarity and uniformity.Examples and Designation:
The document provides examples on how to designate pliers according to their type, jaw length (short or long), and nominal size. For example, round nose pliers with short jaws and a nominal length of 125 mm are designated as “Round nose pliers 143 - ISO 9655 - 125 - S”.Normative References:
ISO 9655 references essential associated documents for testing and technical specifications:- ISO 9656: Test methods for pliers and nippers in electronics
- ISO 9657: General technical requirements for these tools
- ISO 8979: Nomenclature for pliers and nippers
Marking Requirements:
Marking of pliers must comply with ISO 9657 standards, ensuring proper identification and traceability of tools.
Applications
ISO 9655:2004 single-purpose pliers are vital tools in various electronics-related domains:
Electronic Assembly:
Used for gripping and manipulating fine wires, components, and connectors during PCB soldering and assembly.Precision Repair Work:
Ideal for technicians handling delicate electronic parts requiring precise manipulation without damage.Manufacturing and Quality Control:
Ensures tools meet consistent dimensional standards essential for reproducible and ergonomic electronic manufacturing processes.Research and Development:
Used by engineers and designers working on prototype electronics requiring specialized gripping tools.
The dimensional standardization helps companies select the right tools to enhance accuracy, reduce damage risk, and improve overall handling within the electronics industry.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 9655 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 29, Small tools, Subcommittee SC 10, Assembly
tools for screws and nuts, pliers and nippers.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 9655:1989) which has been technically revised.

Avant-propos
