Foreword
The text of the International Standard ISO 8320-2:2001 has been prepared by Technical
Committee ISO/TC 172 "Optics and optical instruments" in collaboration with Technical
Committee CEN/TC 170 "Ophthalmic optics", the secretariat of which is held by DIN.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication
of an identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by October 2001, and conflicting national
standards shall be withdrawn at the latest by October 2001.
According to the CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations, the national standards organizations of
the following countries are bound to implement this European Standard: Austria, Belgium,
Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy,
Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United
Kingdom.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this part of ISO 8320 may be the subject of patent

International Standard ISO 8320-2 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 172, Optics and optical
instruments, Subcommittee SC 7, Ophthalmic optics and instruments.
This first edition of ISO 8320-2, together with ISO 8320-1, cancels and replaces ISO 8320:1986, which has been
technically revised. The 1986 edition of ISO 8320 has been modified to include new terms for contact lenses and
expanded in scope to provide, for the first time, the addition of terms for contact lens care products. As a result of
this expansion, ISO 8320 consists of two parts.

Introduction
ISO 8320 is a convenient reference source for persons interested in the vocabulary and symbols applicable to
contact lenses and contact lens care products. It is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of all terms,
definitions and symbols that could be applicable to contact lenses and contact lens care products. The contents of
ISO 8320 are limited to the important terms, definitions, symbols and abbreviations applicable to contact lenses or
contact lens care products which are defined and used within the text of the other International Standards.
ISO 8320 was not developed for legal purposes and not all the terms, definitions and symbols contained therein
have been universally accepted. There are countries where contact lens care products have been regulated for
many years. Their national laws and regulations may use terms, definitions, symbols and abbreviations for contact
lens care products that may differ from those contained in ISO 8320. In cases where there are differences, the
terms, definitions, symbols and abbreviations defined in the national laws or regulations would take precedence
over those contained in ISO 8320 for products marketed in their country. However, it is anticipated that the use of
ISO 8320, whenever possible, by manufacturers, practitioners and consumers will promote mutual recognition and
international harmonization of the vocabulary and symbols used with contact lens care products. Until such time as
harmonization and mutual recognition is achieved, manufacturers should become familiar with the national laws
and regulations of the specific country where they intend to market their contact lens care products.
