Optical amplifiers - Test methods -- Part 11-1: Polarization mode dispersion parameter - Jones matrix eigenanalysis (JME)
IEC 61290-11-1:2008 provides information that applies to all commercially available optical amplifiers (OAs) including optical fibre amplifiers (OFAs) using active fibres and semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) using semiconductor gain media. Although the Jones matrix eigenanalysis (JME) test method is in principle also applicable to unpumped (that is, unpowered) OAs, the JME technique in this standard applies to pumped (that is, powered) OAs only. This edition is a technical revision that specifically addresses additional types of optical amplifiers. It also includes updated references.

Overview
EN 61290-11-1:2008 (adopted by CLC from IEC 61290-11-1:2008) specifies a laboratory test method - Jones matrix eigenanalysis (JME) - for measuring polarization mode dispersion (PMD) of commercially available optical amplifiers (OAs). It applies to optical fibre amplifiers (OFAs), semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) and planar waveguide optical amplifiers (PWOAs). The standard describes the measurement principle, required apparatus and the calculations needed to obtain differential group delay (DGD) from normalized Stokes parameters measured at two closely spaced wavelengths. The JME procedure in EN 61290-11-1:2008 is intended for pumped (powered) OAs.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: PMD testing for all commercial OAs (OFA, SOA, PWOA), JME method for powered devices.
- Measurement principle: Uses normalized Stokes-parameter measurements at two adjacent wavelengths and Jones matrix eigenanalysis to determine DGD and PMD behaviour versus wavelength.
- Apparatus (typical):
- Tuneable narrow-linewidth laser (single-line or narrowband)
- Polarization adjuster and three linear polarizers (approximately 45° relative)
- Polarimeter and input/output optics (fibre pigtails or lens systems)
- Device under test (DUT) test harness and ASE assessment
- Degree of polarization (DOP): Test source must deliver at least 25% DOP at the polarimeter input; Annex A analyses DOP reduction by amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and requires measuring DOP during the procedure.
- Robustness: JME method shown to be immune to polarization-dependent gain (PDG) and polarization-dependent loss (PDL) up to approximately 1 dB.
- Outputs & calculations: Display of DGD versus wavelength; metrics include average and maximum DGD and related plots (examples provided in the standard).
Applications and users
- Manufacturers of OAs (OFA, SOA, PWOA) for product characterization and development.
- Test laboratories and QA teams performing standardized PMD compliance and production testing.
- System designers and integrators assessing amplifier impact on high-speed fibre systems where PMD can impair signal integrity.
- R&D groups studying polarization effects, ASE influence on DOP, and amplifier design trade-offs.

all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
