75 FOREWORD
76 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising all
77 national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international co-
78 operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and in addition to
79 other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports, Publicly Available
80 Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical
81 committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work.
82 International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation.
83 IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions
84 determined by agreement between the two organizations.
85 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
86 consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all interested IEC
87 National Committees.
88 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National Committees
89 in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC Publications is accurate,
90 IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any misinterpretation by any end user.
91 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications transparently
92 to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between any IEC Publication
93 and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
94 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity assessment
95 services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any services carried out by
96 independent certification bodies.
97 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
98 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and members of
99 its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or other damage of any
100 nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and expenses arising out of the
101 publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC Publications.
102 8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
103 indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
104 9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent rights.
105 IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
106 Amendment 1 to IEC 61340-4-6 has been prepared by IEC technical committee 101: Electrostatics.
107 This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2010. This edition constitutes a
108 technical revision.
109 This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
110 a) editorial comments made during the review of the first edition were reviewed and incorporated
111 where appropriate;
112 b) several changes were made to update the Figures and improve the presentation of metric
113 measurements (Imperial measurements have been removed);
114 c) the option of using an integrated checker for wrist strap system continuity testing has been added;
115 d) the evaluation and acceptance limit for wrist strap resistance has been changed so as to
116 harmonize with IEC 61340-5-1.

137 INTRODUCTION
138 This part of IEC 61340 has been developed to establish test methods for evaluating the electrical and
139 mechanical attributes of wrist straps used in an electrostatic control program. Wrist straps are
140 intended to connect the user to electrical ground, thus preventing electrostatic charge on a user’s
141 body from attaining a level that may damage ESD susceptible devices or assemblies.
142 Test methods and performance limits for evaluation, acceptance, and functional testing are provided.

152 This part of IEC 61340 provides electrical and mechanical test methods and performance limits for
153 evaluation, acceptance and periodic verification testing of wrist straps.
154 NOTE All dimensions are nominal except where indicated.
155 This standard is intended for testing wrist straps and wrist strap systems used for the grounding of
156 personnel engaged in working with ESD sensitive assemblies and devices.
157 It does not address constant monitoring systems.
158 2 Terms and definitions
159 For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.
160 2.1
161 wrist strap
162 assembled device consisting of a band and ground cord that is designed to provide electrical
163 connection from a person’s skin to ground
164 2.2

192 user contact with an electrical potential.
193 2.9
194 resistance range
195 user-specified upper and lower resistance values which define the user-acceptable resistance values
196 of a wrist strap or wrist strap system
197 2.10
198 strain relief
199 construction feature designed to protect the connections and cord from premature failure
200 2.11
201 breakaway force
202 force required to disconnect the ground cord from the band
203 3 Testing levels and performance limits
204 This standard specifies different types of testing for wrist straps. Tables 1, 2 and 3 detail the three
205 types of testing with the associated limits and subclause references to test methods. The methods
206 provide appropriate tests for the different levels of wrist strap examination. Evaluation tests are
207 laboratory tests for measuring the performance of a wrist strap or for the comparison of wrist straps.
208 Acceptance tests provide methods for incoming goods inspection. Finally, the periodic verification or
209 functional test is a simple check of electrical continuity. This test shall be used on a regular, user
210 defined basis, to ensure that the wrist strap is electrically functional. Testing shall be carried out under
211 ambient laboratory conditions. The temperature and humidity at the time of testing shall be recorded
212 and reported in the test report. In the case of any dispute regarding test values, conditioning and
213 testing shall be done at (23 ± 2) °C and (12 ± 3) % RH.
214 NOTE Testing has shown that environmental conditions do not significantly affect test results.

137 INTRODUCTION
138 This part of IEC 61340 has been developed to establish test methods for evaluating the
139 electrical and mechanical attributes of wrist straps used in an electrostatic control program.
140 Wrist straps are intended to connect the user to electrical ground, thus preventing electrostatic
141 charge on a user's body from attaining a level that may damage ESD susceptible devices or
142 assemblies.
143 Test methods and performance limits for evaluation, acceptance, and functional testing are
144 provided.

148 Part 4-6: Standard test methods for specific
149 applications – Wrist straps
150
151
152 1 Scope
153 This part of IEC 61340 provides electrical and mechanical test methods and performance limits
154 for evaluation, acceptance and periodic verification testing of wrist straps.
155 NOTE All dimensions are nominal except where indicated.
156 This standard is intended for testing wrist straps and wrist strap systems used for the grounding
157 of personnel engaged in working with ESD sensitive assemblies and devices.
158 It does not address constant monitoring systems.
159 2 Normative references
160 The following documents are referred to in the text in such a way that some or all of their content
161 constitutes requirements of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies.
162 For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any

177 assembled device consisting of a band and ground cord that is designed to provide electrical
178 connection from a person's skin to ground
179 3.2
180 wrist strap system
181 wrist strap when properly worn by a person, where the electrical path includes the person, the

218 4 Testing levels and performance limits
219 This standard specifies different types of testing for wrist straps. Tables 1, 2 and 3 detail the
220 three types of testing with the associated limits and subclause references to test methods. The
221 methods provide appropriate tests for the different levels of wrist strap examination. Evaluation
222 tests are laboratory tests for measuring the performance of a wrist strap or for the comparison
223 of wrist straps. Acceptance tests provide methods for incoming goods inspection. Finally, the
