1 Scope

The present document provides basic guidance on the range of different numbering options within E.164 that may be

used for services provided on public networks using TIPHON compliant technology. The present document identifies:

- the various numbering options;
- the main considerations in selecting an option;
- the advantages and disadvantages of each option;
- issues concerning number portability.

The information and advice in the present document applies primarily to TIPHON Scenarios 0 (all IP) and 2 (SCN to

IP) but there are additional comments about Scenario 3 (SCN to IP to SCN).

NOTE: The E.164 number will normally be presented as the calling number in the Calling Line Identity which is

relevant to Scenario 1 (IP to SCN) but this is not a major influence on the choice of E.164 number.
