01.080.01 - Graphical symbols in general

This document serves to complement the basic standards for safety signs: the ISO 3864 series, ISO 7010, ISO 16069, ISO 23601 and ISO 17398, as well as ISO 45001. This document contains recommendations and explanations on the practical application of safety signs to form a system of communication intended to reduce risk.

This Standard defines terms related to functions, products, properties and other terms as well as symbols applying to geosynthetics. Definitions of terms not included in this standard may be found in the appropriate test methods standards.
Note: ISO/TC 221 decided to split the content of the standard in two parts.

The intent of ISO 10318-2:2015 is to define property symbols, graphical symbols, and pictograms used in EN and ISO geosynthetics standards. Definitions of particular or specific symbols and pictograms terms not included in this this part of ISO 10318 can be found in the International Standards describing appropriate test methods.

This international standard provides generic rules for the representation of states of objects
by graphical symbols standardized in IEC 60617, ISO 14617, IEC 60417, for example, and for
future graphical symbols included in these standards.

ISO 3864-3:2012 gives principles, criteria and guidance for the design of graphical symbols for use in safety signs as defined in ISO 3864‑1, and for the safety sign element of product safety labels as defined in ISO 3864‑2.

ISO 81714-1:2010 specifies basic rules for the design of graphical symbols for use in the technical documentation of products taking into account basic application needs.

ISO 81714-1 was prepared jointly by Technical Committees ISO/TC 10, Technical product documentation, Subcommittee SC 10, Process plant documentation and tpd-symbols, and IEC/TC 3, Information structures, documentation and graphical symbols. The draft was circulated for voting to the national bodies of both ISO and IEC.

ISO 81714-1:2010 specifies basic rules for the design of graphical symbols for use in the technical documentation of products taking into account basic application needs.

IEC 80416-1:2008 provides basic principles and guidelines for the creation of graphical symbols for registration, and provides the key principles and rules for the preparation of title, description and note(s). This part of ISO 81714 specifies basic rules for the design of graphical symbols for use in the technical documentation of products, taking into account basic application needs.

ISO/IEC Guide 74:2004 gives procedures for the development of graphical symbols for public information, use in safety signs and product safety labels, and use on equipment and products. Such graphical symbols can be included in consumer documentation. ISO/IEC Guide 74:2004 does not cover road traffic signs and graphical symbols for use in technical documentation. Applies to graphical symbols used in IEC publications dealing with fibre optics. Provides uniform graphical symbols for the various fibre optic elements and devices.

This Part 1 of the standard specifies the key principles for the creation of symbol originals for use on equipment. In accordance with the intended meaning of the symbol originals, it contains rules for design such as shape and size, and also for preparation of the accompanying texts. It has the status of a horizontal standard in accordance with IEC Guide 108.
