M/600 - Tumble Dryers

Purpose

This mandate relates to the standardisation of tumble dryers to support the implementation of new European Union regulations on ecodesign and energy labelling. Specifically, it aims to align standards with Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/2533, which updates ecodesign requirements for household tumble dryers, amends an earlier regulation (EU 2023/826), and repeals previous regulations including (EU) No 932/2012. It also supports the implementation of energy labelling requirements under Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/2534, which replaces former delegated regulation (EU) No 392/2012.

Standardisation request

The European Commission has issued a standardisation request to the European Standardisation Organisations (ESOs), which include CEN, CENELEC, and ETSI. The request is to develop and update harmonised standards that provide the technical specifications and testing methods necessary to implement the above-mentioned regulations effectively. These standards will facilitate compliance assessments, ensure market surveillance, and support manufacturers in meeting the new ecodesign and energy labelling criteria for household tumble dryers.

Expected deliverables

• Harmonised standards detailing ecodesign requirements for household tumble dryers, including energy efficiency and environmental impact criteria.
• Standardised testing methodologies to objectively assess tumble dryer performance in line with the updated regulations.
• Documentation to support conformity assessment procedures under the EU regulatory framework.

The deliverables will provide a consistent basis for regulation enforcement and market transparency, ensuring that household tumble dryers sold in the EU meet contemporary energy and environmental standards.

Context

This mandate follows the EU’s ongoing legislative efforts under Directive 2009/125/EC to improve the environmental performance of energy-related products. The updated regulations and corresponding standardisation mandate reflect technological advances and the EU’s commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency in household appliances. The decision was formalised on 1 December 2023 and incorporated into the resolution reference CEN/BT C188/2023. Standardisation work under this mandate will facilitate the transition toward more eco-friendly and energy-efficient tumble dryers in the European market.
