(Specification)Standard Specification for Production Acceptance Testing System for Lighter-Than-Air Light Sport Aircraft
Standard Specification for Production Acceptance Testing System for Lighter-Than-Air Light Sport Aircraft
ABSTRACT
This specification covers production acceptance test requirements for the manufacture of lighter-than-air light sport aircraft. This provides the minimum requirements for the establishment of a ground and flight test program for verifying the initial (first run) production aircraft meets certain operational performance requirement that have been set forth by the manufacturer in its Aircraft Operating Instructions. The minimum requirements to verify that each subsequent production aircraft has no obvious defects that would prevent the safe operation of the aircraft are described. Every production aircraft shall be flight tested to the minimums such as lighter-than-air airships, hot-air balloons and gas/hybrid balloons.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers production acceptance test requirements for the manufacture of lighter-than-air light sport aircraft.
1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview
ASTM F2356-05a(2018) is the international standard specification that outlines the production acceptance testing system for lighter-than-air light sport aircraft. Published by ASTM International, this standard sets the minimum requirements for ground and flight testing to ensure that each manufactured aircraft meets operational performance requirements and is free of defects that could affect safe operation. The specification applies to a range of lighter-than-air craft, including airships, hot-air balloons, and gas or hybrid balloons, and is directly managed by ASTM Committee F37 on Light Sport Aircraft.
Key Topics
- Production Acceptance Test Requirements: Details the procedures for initial and subsequent aircraft, verifying conformity to the manufacturer's Aircraft Operating Instructions.
- Ground and Flight Testing Programs: Ensures robust systems are in place for ground and flight tests, mandatory for each unit.
- Airships: Minimum of fifteen minutes of flight including takeoff, landing, trimming, and verification of control systems and instruments.
- Hot-Air Balloons: Minimum fifteen-minute static inflation, with all vents, valves, burners, and suspension systems tested.
- Gas/Hybrid Balloons: Pressurized inflation and operational testing of valves, controls, and suspension.
- Defect and Safety Evaluation: Each aircraft must be inspected thoroughly to identify any defects or issues that might compromise safety.
- Documentation Procedures: Written processes are required for recording and storing acceptance test results, all correlated to individual aircraft for traceability.
- Post-Flight Acceptance and Inspection: Mandatory written procedures and signed reviews to ensure that flight-critical attachments and structures meet safety standards.
- Engine and Instrument Verification: Includes procedures for engine break-in and ensuring all instruments function within accepted parameters.
- Handling Test Failures: Written protocols must guide failure review, rework, and retesting before an aircraft can be released.
Applications
ASTM F2356-05a(2018) plays a critical role in the aviation industry, particularly for manufacturers and operators of lighter-than-air light sport aircraft. Practical applications include:
- Aircraft Manufacturing: Assists manufacturers in implementing standardized, repeatable acceptance testing, reducing risks of operational failure and increasing overall safety.
- Type Certification and Special Airworthiness: Supports compliance with regulatory and airworthiness certification processes by documenting thorough testing and quality control steps.
- Quality Assurance and Traceability: Enables manufacturers and regulators to trace specific aircraft manufacturing and test records, enhancing post-production accountability and maintenance planning.
- Safety and Defect Prevention: Minimizes the likelihood of introducing aircraft with defects into active use, supporting a safer aviation environment for both operators and passengers.
- Operational Performance Verification: Confirms each aircraft's ability to meet operational performance as described in the official Aircraft Operating Instructions.
