Standard Specification for Application of Gypsum Base to Receive<brk/> Gypsum Veneer Plaster

ABSTRACT
This specification covers the minimum requirements for, and methods of, application of gypsum veneer base for gypsum veneer plasters. Details of construction for a specific assembly to achieve the required fire resistance shall be obtained from reports of fire-resistance tests, engineering evaluations, or listings from recognized fire testing laboratories. The materials shall be classified as follows: gypsum base for veneer plasters; gypsum backing board for coreboard; special fire-retardant gypsum base; foil-backed gypsum base; gypsum veneer plaster; nails; non-load bearing steel; load bearing steel; steel framing, non-load bearing; accessories; adhesives; steel framing load bearing; and wood framing. The maximum spacing of framing members for singly gypsum base construction shall be not more than then specified values. Application of gypsum base, single-ply gypsum base, adhesive-mechanical fastener, foil-backed gypsum base, two-ply gypsum base, and application over existing surfaces shall be indicated. Solid gypsum base partitions shall include face ply, core, and runners. Direct adhesive application shall be used only on interior masonry or concrete walls above grade, or inside of exterior masonry cavity walls. Gypsum base application over steel framing and furring shall include screw application, framing space, and screw spacing. Gypsum base applied to the soffit of arches shall be carefully bent into place and shall conform to the specified values of bending radii.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers the minimum requirements for, and methods of, application of gypsum veneer base for gypsum veneer plasters.  
1.2 Gypsum veneer base shall not be used as a base for direct adhesive application of ceramic, metal, or plastic tile in areas exposed to abnormal moisture or humidity or temperature.  
1.3 Details of construction for a specific assembly to achieve the required fire resistance shall be obtained from reports of fire-resistance tests, engineering evaluations, or listings from recognized fire testing laboratories.  
1.4 Where a specific degree of sound control is required for veneer plaster assemblies and constructions, details of construction shall be in accordance with official reports of tests conducted in recognized sound testing laboratories in accordance with the applicable sound tests, Test Methods C423, E90, or E492.  
1.5 Where this specification is more stringent (size or thickness of framing; spacing of fasteners) than the fire-rated construction, this specification shall govern; otherwise, the construction described in the fire test report shall govern.  
1.6 Unheated spaces above gypsum veneer base ceilings shall be properly ventilated (see Appendix X3).

This specification covers the installation of lathing and furring to receive interior and exterior Portland cement-based plaster. SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 Each abuse/impact property of abuse resistant wall panels is divided into three classification levels. The three levels of classification are: Level I, Level II, and Level III, with Level I representing the lowest rating for any given property. The test methods specified are utilized to establish the abuse-resistance classification of an abuse resistant wall panel. Each classification level requires a minimum overall specified performance. Any classified abuse resistant wall panel can be used at a classification level which is rated lower than the highest level qualified.
SCOPE
1.1 This standard establishes classifications of abuse resistance based on the abrasion resistance and impact resistance performance of nondecorated interior gypsum panel products and fiber-reinforced cement panels (abuse resistant wall panels).

Standard Test Methods for Measurement of Tensile Strength or Bond Strength of Portland Cement-Based Plaster by Direct Tension

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 The purpose of the test methods in this standard is to measure the tensile strength or bond strength of portland cement-based plaster to its substrate. The values obtained using the test methods are not purported to be representative of the actual wind load capacity or other structural properties of a specific portland cement-based plaster installation but may be helpful in assessing such load capacities.  
4.2 Because the test methods described in this standard are used for evaluation of portland cement-based plaster cured at least 28 days, load results obtained by either test method must be interpreted based on sound engineering practice, applicable building regulations, and codes having jurisdiction. The decision of whether to use the load results directly or to use the load results as modified by an appropriate safety factor to obtain acceptable working loads is left to the discretion of the test specifier. Determination of an appropriate safety factor shall be left to the discretion of the test specifier. Methods to calculate a safety factor and a maximum permitted working load are provided in the appendixes.  
4.3 When the test methods contained in this standard are used on test specimens installed on existing structures, the test results shall not be generalized to a larger wall area without sufficient test sampling. Such efforts should be based on engineering experience and judgment of the test specifier.
SCOPE
1.1 These test methods cover procedures for determining the tensile strength of a section of portland cement-based plaster, the bond strength between portland cement-based plaster and a solid plaster base, or the fastener pull-out or lath pull-over strength for portland cement-based plaster bases over framing in either an exterior (stucco) or interior application. The test procedures are destructive in nature within the localized test areas and, after testing is concluded, require appropriate repair of the finish system as well as any underlying materials damaged during testing.  
1.2 These test methods are suitable for use on portland cement-based plaster finish systems on both new and existing construction. Test methods shall be conducted a minimum of 28 days after application of the portland cement-based plaster. Mechanical Load Test Method A and Vacuum Chamber Testing shall be used to determine the tensile strength or bond strength of direct-applied portland cement-based plaster and may be useful in evaluating the efficacy of different surface preparation characteristics, bonding agents, or both. Mechanical Load Test Method B and Vacuum Chamber Testing shall be used to determine the tensile strength of portland cement-based plaster installed over mechanically attached lath.  
1.3 These test methods are suitable for use in both laboratory and field samples. No correlation shall be made between laboratory and field testing.  
1.4 These test methods are not intended to evaluate the performance of the underlying construction or framing members. Test results on a particular building may be variable depending on the specimen location, condition, and installation, and are subject to interpretation by the test specifier.  
1.5 These test methods are not intended to evaluate the performance of coatings applied to the surface of the portland cement-based plaster.  
1.6 These test methods are not intended to be a pre-construction qualifier to determine if the surfaces are appropriate for application of portland cement plaster. The test methods are intended to be used as a tool to quantitatively evaluate existing portland cement plaster cladding that is suspected of questionable bond or uncertain fastening to the substrate.

ABSTRACT
This specification covers the standard requirements for the application of full thickness Portland cement-based plaster for exterior (stucco) and interior work. It also sets forth tables for proportioning of various plaster mixes and plaster thickness. The materials used shall consist of the following: cement which shall be a Portland cement, air-entraining Portland cement, masonry cement, blended hydraulic cement, air-entraining blended hydraulic cement, or plastic cement; Type S hydrated lime; aggregates such as perlite and sand for base and job-mixed finish coats; water to be used in mixing; admixtures; and fibers. Standard Specification for Molded Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum Parts

ABSTRACT
This specification covers molded glass fiber reinforced gypsum (GRG) parts, which are nonload-bearing, thin-shell, ornamental shapes for architectural embellishment of interior building construction. GRG parts shall be produced using the same materials used to make the composites in conformance with the referenced specification. GRG parts shall be manufactured from the mixed slurry or alpha gypsum cement, potable water and additives, and glass fiber reinforcement using either the hand lay-up or the spray-up process in a mold. GRG parts shall be produced according to approved shop drawings. Shop drawings shall specify part dimensions, quantities, recommended attachment points and methods, reinforcements, embedments, and tolerance. Standard Specification for Application of Gypsum Veneer Plaster

ABSTRACT
This specification covers the minimum requirements for gypsum veneer plaster and includes application methods on systems such as electric heat cable systems but not exceeding a specified temperature. Applicable building code regulations should be followed when a specific degree of fire resistance is required. Plaster and other cementitious materials should be kept dry until these are ready to be used and should be kept off the ground, under cover, and away from damp walls and surfaces.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers the minimum requirements for and methods of applying gypsum veneer plaster.  
1.2 Where a specific degree of fire resistance is required for veneer plaster systems, applicable building code regulations shall be followed.  
1.2.1 Details of construction for a specific assembly to achieve the required fire resistance shall be obtained from reports of fire-resistance tests, engineering evaluations, or listings from recognized fire testing laboratories.  
1.3 Where a specific degree of sound control is required for veneer plaster assemblies and constructions, details of construction shall be obtained from reports of acoustical tests of assemblies that have met the required or specified acoustical performance.
Note 1: To ensure desirable results, coordinate this specification with Specification C844.

Standard Specification for Installation of Interior Lathing and Furring

ABSTRACT
This specification covers the minimum requirements for, and the methods of application of, interior lathing and furring to receive gypsum plaster applied. Other materials are not prohibited from being used provided that their physical characteristics and durability under conditions of usage are at least equal in performance to those described. All materials shall be kept dry, preferably by being stored inside. Where necessary to be stored outside, materials shall be stacked off the ground, supported on a level platform, and protected from the weather and surface contamination. Materials shall be neatly stacked flat with care taken to avoid damage to edges, ends, or surfaces. The materials to be used are the following: tie wire and hanger wire, gypsum lath, expanded metal lath, welded wire lath, woven wire lath, nails, screws, staples, paper, and accessories such as control joints, cornerite, channels, rod and flat hangers, clips, and striplath. In general, during installation, the following shall be required: application of gypsum lath to supports, application of gypsum lath to wood supports, application of gypsum lath to metal supports, studless solid partitions (gypsum lath and plaster), application of metal plaster bases to framing members, studless solid partitions (metal lath and plaster), suspended and furred ceilings (metal lath and gypsum lath construction), main runners, cross furring, and metal furring for walls.

Other materials are not prohibited from being used provided that their physical characteristics and durability under conditions of usage are at least equal in performance to those described.
