Overview
ASTM D1649-01(2019) is the internationally recognized Standard Specification for Strontium Chromate Pigment, published by ASTM International. This specification sets the criteria for the composition, purity, and performance characteristics of strontium chromate pigment intended for use in protective and decorative coatings. The standard ensures that strontium chromate produced for industrial use meets stringent requirements regarding purity, particle size, color characteristics, and chemical composition. Following the principles of the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee, this standard supports global uniformity and trade.
Key Topics
- Material Purity: The pigment must be commercially pure strontium chromate, free from extenders and organic materials, ensuring high performance in applications.
- Chemical Composition: Minimum percentages of strontium and chromium, and strict limits on chlorides, sulfates, and water content, are specified for product quality and consistency.
- Physical Properties: Requirements include mass color, tint character, tinting strength, and maximum allowable residue on a fine 45-μm sieve, ensuring predictability in final coatings.
- Testing and Sampling: Clear protocols are established for sampling batches and for the chemical analysis of pigment purity and water content, leveraging referenced ASTM test methods.
- Quality Assurance and Mutual Agreement: The color and tinting properties must meet mutually agreed upon standards between the purchaser and the seller, promoting flexibility in application while maintaining quality.
Applications
Strontium chromate pigment is widely used for its exceptional properties as a pigment and corrosion inhibitor in specialized coatings, such as:
- Protective coatings: Offers excellent corrosion resistance, making it a reliable choice for use in industrial, automotive, and aerospace protective paints.
- Decorative coatings: Ensures vibrant color and long-lasting tint in a wide range of decorative applications, especially where yellow pigmentation is desired.
- Metal surface primers: Used as a key ingredient in primers for aluminum and other metals, enhancing adhesion and durability.
- Industrial paint systems: Incorporated in heavy-duty paint systems where resistance to harsh environments is critical.
By adhering to ASTM D1649, manufacturers and specifiers can be confident in the reliability, safety, and performance of strontium chromate-based products.
