Overview
EN ISO 10768:2010 is an internationally recognized standard developed by CEN and ISO, detailing a test method to determine the fatigue resistance of elastic materials used in footwear. This method evaluates how well elastic components in footwear withstand repeated stretching during normal walking, both before and after accelerated ageing. It is applicable to any type of elastic used in footwear, such as tapes, cords, or fabrics containing rubber or similar stretchable substances.
By providing a clear and repeatable methodology for assessing fatigue resistance, EN ISO 10768:2010 enhances quality assurance processes for footwear manufacturers, suppliers, and testing laboratories. Ensuring the durability and performance of elastic materials is vital for consumer satisfaction and product longevity in the footwear industry.
Key Topics
- Scope of the Standard: EN ISO 10768:2010 defines the process for testing the endurance of elastic materials under conditions simulating normal wear, focusing on resistance to repeated extension.
- Sample Preparation and Conditioning: The standard outlines the dimensions and preparation of test pieces, including clamping methods and environmental conditioning to control variables like temperature and humidity.
- Fatigue Testing Procedure: Test pieces undergo cyclical stretching to specified elongation levels at a set speed, with results based on visible damage, such as broken elastic threads or severe wrinkling.
- Assessment after Accelerated Ageing: The method allows testing both before and after subjecting samples to elevated temperatures for fixed periods to simulate material ageing.
- Reporting Requirements: Results must be recorded as the percentage of broken threads and detailed in a test report, along with descriptions of observed damage.
Applications
The test method described in EN ISO 10768:2010 is essential for:
- Footwear Manufacturers: Ensuring the durability of elastic materials used in shoe uppers, straps, or linings to maintain fit and performance over the lifetime of the product.
- Quality Control Laboratories: Standardizing testing procedures to evaluate incoming material batches or finished products for compliance with durability specifications.
- Material Suppliers: Demonstrating product reliability and fitness for use in a range of footwear applications by providing validated test results to customers.
- Regulatory and Certification Bodies: Supporting conformity assessment and certification processes for footwear products heading to market, particularly in regions requiring adherence to European or International standards.
By complying with EN ISO 10768:2010, companies can minimize product failures due to degraded elastic components, boost customer confidence, and enhance competitiveness in both domestic and export markets.
Related Standards
To ensure robust material testing and consistent product quality, EN ISO 10768:2010 should be used alongside related footwear and material standards, including:
- ISO 10765 - Footwear - Test method for the characterization of elastic materials - Tensile performance
- ISO 18454 - Footwear - Standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing of footwear and components
These standards complement EN ISO 10768:2010 by providing procedures for measuring tensile strength and ensuring repeatable testing conditions, enabling comprehensive evaluation of elastic materials used in footwear manufacturing.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
