ISO 10768:2010 specifies a test method for the determination of the resistance of elastic materials for footwear, to repeated extension produced during normal walking. The test can be carried out before and after accelerated ageing. This method is applicable to any elastic material used for footwear.

Diese Internationale Norm legt ein Prüfverfahren zur Bestimmung der Beständigkeit von elastischen Materialien
für Schuhe gegen wiederholte Dehnung fest, die durch normales Gehen erzeugt wird. Diese Prüfung
kann vor und nach beschleunigter Alterung durchgeführt werden. Dieses Verfahren gilt für sämtliche Arten
von elastischen Materialien, die in Schuhen verwendet werden.

Overview

EN ISO 10768:2010 / ISO 10768:2010 defines a standardized laboratory method to assess the fatigue resistance of elastic materials used in footwear. The test measures how elastic tapes, cords or fabrics withstand repeated extension similar to the stretching experienced during normal walking. Tests can be carried out before and after accelerated ageing to evaluate durability changes over time.

• Test principle: Repeated harmonic extension of a clamped specimen to 150% of initial length or to the material’s limit of useful extension (as determined by ISO 10765).
• Apparatus:
  • Sewing machine (round point needle 90s or 70s; nylon/polyester thread ~tex 17/3; ~6 stitches/cm).
  • Repeated-extension machine with minimum separation (60 ± 10) mm, adjustable up to +150 mm; reciprocating action at 60 ± 5 cycles/min; cycle counter.
  • Ageing chamber at 70 ± 2 °C for accelerated ageing.
  • PU coagulated woven fabric (~1 mm) and basic measuring tools.
• Specimen preparation:
  • Cut three (or six if ageing is applied) test pieces ~65 ± 5 mm long, mark and cap ends with coated fabric squares and sew along defined lines.
  • Condition specimens at (23 ± 2) °C and 50 ± 5% RH for at least 24 h (ISO 18454).
• Test procedure:
  • Cycle specimens in the extension machine in 2 000-cycle increments up to 10 000 cycles, inspecting after each increment.
  • Stop earlier if >10% elastic threads are broken or severe wrinkling occurs.
  • For aged samples: age at 70 °C for 7 days, then recondition 48 h before testing.
• Results reporting:
  • Express damage as % broken elastic threads using n/n0 × 100 (mean of three specimens).
  • If threads cannot be counted, report a qualitative evaluation after a specified number of cycles.
  • Test report must reference ISO 10768 and record material description, cycles, damage details, ageing results and any deviations.

Applications and users

• Footwear manufacturers and component suppliers use ISO 10768 for product development, material selection and quality control of elastics in uppers, hems and straps.
• Independent testing laboratories apply the standard to generate comparable durability data for suppliers’ claims.
• R&D teams and quality managers use the method to assess performance after ageing, enabling better lifecycle and warranty decisions.
