Overview
EN ISO 15984:2002 (ISO 15984:2002) specifies dimensional, mechanical and application data for open end blind rivets with break pull mandrel and countersunk head, manufactured from austenitic stainless steel A2/A2. The standard covers nominal diameters from 3 mm to 5 mm and defines geometry, material, mechanical properties and acceptance/testing references for these blind fasteners.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and materials
- Rivet body and mandrel both A2 (austenitic stainless steel) in accordance with ISO 3506‑1.
- Plain (natural) finish required.
- Dimensions and tolerances
- Nominal diameters: 3; 3.2; 4; 4.8; 5 mm.
- Detailed head, shank and length dimensions plus recommended grip ranges are provided (see Table 1 and Figure 1 in the standard).
- Clearance hole diameters (h1) are specified to avoid assembly problems and strength reductions.
- Mechanical performance
- Minimum shear and tensile loads and maximum mandrel break loads are specified and tested per ISO 14589. Examples:
- 3 mm: shear ≥ 1 800 N, tensile ≥ 2 200 N, mandrel break ≤ 4 100 N
- 4 mm: shear ≥ 2 700 N, tensile ≥ 3 500 N, mandrel break ≤ 6 500 N
- 5 mm: shear ≥ 4 700 N, tensile ≥ 5 800 N, mandrel break ≤ 9 000 N
- Mandrel push‑out resistance must exceed 10 N.
- Mandrel head retention test loads are specified (e.g., 35 N for 3/3.2 mm, 40 N for 4 mm, 45 N for 4.8/5 mm).
- Minimum shear and tensile loads and maximum mandrel break loads are specified and tested per ISO 14589. Examples:
- Quality and acceptance
- Workmanship rules: burr‑free, well‑formed heads/shanks, no cracking after setting (5× magnification).
- Acceptance inspection defaults to ISO 3269 unless otherwise agreed.
- Designation
- Example: Blind rivet ISO 15984 - 4 ×××× 12 - A2/A2
Applications and who uses it
- Typical use: blind fastening where only one side of an assembly is accessible (sheet metal assemblies, enclosures, HVAC, building façade panels, general manufacturing).
- Benefits of the A2/A2 combination: corrosion resistance and compatibility where stainless fasteners are needed and a countersunk head for flush finish is required.
- Primary users:
- Fastener manufacturers and product designers specifying rivet geometry and performance
- Mechanical and structural engineers specifying blind fasteners for assemblies
- Quality inspectors and test laboratories performing acceptance testing
- Procurement teams ensuring conformity to EN ISO 15984 for stainless steel countersunk blind rivets

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards adopted
by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 15984 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 2, Fasteners.
Annex A of this International Standard is for information only.
