Furniture - Assessment of the surface reflectance

This document specifies a method for the assessment of the surface reflectance of furniture surfaces and relates to rigid surfaces of all finished products regardless of materials, except for finishes on leather and fabrics, which are excluded from this document.
The test is intended to be carried out on finished furniture, but can be carried out on test panels of the same material, finished in an identical manner to the finished product, and of a size sufficient to meet the requirements of the test.
The test method is not applicable to some metallic paints and pearly coatings.

This document is currently submitted to the CEN Enquiry.
This document will supersede EN 13721:2004.
Compared to EN 13721:2004, the following modification has been made:

— revised scope: test method is not applicable to some metallic paints and pearly coatings;

— normative references updated;

— additional terms and definitions “final inspection”, “colorants control” added;

1 Scope

This document specifies a method for the assessment of the surface reflectance of furniture surfaces

and relates to rigid surfaces of all finished products regardless of materials, except for finishes on

leather and fabrics, which are excluded from this document.

The test is intended to be carried out on finished furniture, but can be carried out on test panels of the

same material, finished in an identical manner to the finished product, and of a size sufficient to meet

the requirements of the test.
The test method is not applicable to some metallic paints and pearly coatings.

This document specifies test methods for the verification of the loading capacity of all types of wall attachment devices for storage furniture and their components.
It does not apply to devices intended to prevent the overturning of storage furniture.
The tests consist of the application of loads and forces simulating normal functional use, as well as misuse that might reasonably be expected to occur.
With the exception of the corrosion test in 6.3, the tests are designed to evaluate properties without regard to materials, design/construction or manufacturing processes.
The tests can be applied to the part attached to the furniture alone or to the combination of the part attached to the furniture and the part attached to the wall. The attachment into the wall is not included.
The strength tests are carried out in a test frame with specified properties.
The test results are only valid for the devices tested. These results can be used to represent the performance of production model, provided that the tested model is representative of the production model.
With the exception of the corrosion test, ageing and influences of temperature and humidity are not included.
Annex A (normative) includes requirements for product information.
Annex B (informative) includes a method for the determination of loading capacity.
Annex C (informative) includes an approximate calculation of vertical and horizontal forces.

This document, contains the general safety philosophy, a guideline on the safety assessment that experts are recommended to use when drafting standards and guidance on specific general safety recommendations, and test methods, relating to hazards caused by holes and openings that are common to all types of furniture.
The Technical Report contains guidance that is intended to be used by designers and manufacturers to assess any inherent risk within their products.
The Technical Report is intended to address common risks posed by items of furniture to adults and children over 36 months old. For products designed for children under 36 months attention is drawn to CEN/TR 13387 series of documents.
Safety risks addressed by this document are hazards caused by holes and openings and specifically:
—   entrapment of fingers;
—   shearing or compression/crushing of fingers;
—   sharp edges.
Safety risks not addressed by this document, because they are considered outside of the scope of this report and associated with specific product types, but can be caused by holes and openings include:
—   entrapment of head and neck;
—   entrapment of limbs;
These guidelines do not cover all types of hazards and risks, such as inappropriate use of products, or inadequate supervision of children.
NOTE   Attention is drawn to the importance of ensuring that all other potential hazards relevant to the product e.g. stability, strength and the effects of electrical power etc., are fully addressed in the process of standards writing.

Requirements for strength and durability do not apply to the structure of the building for example the strength of wall hanging cabinets includes only the cabinets and the parts used for attachment. The wall and the wall attachments are not included.
It does not include requirements for the resistance to ageing, degradation and flammability.
