EN 6037:2015 defines a standardized test method to determine the bearing strength of fibre reinforced plastics (FRP) used in aerospace applications. It applies to multidirectional composite laminates manufactured from unidirectional tape or woven fabric reinforcement. The method measures both yield bearing strength (defined by a 0.02 × diameter permanent hole set) and ultimate bearing strength under a bolted tensile load, and specifies specimen preparation, test apparatus, conditioning and reporting requirements.

- Sampling and reporting: Minimum six specimens per condition; test report must include material ID, lay-up, specimen dimensions, test parameters, individual results, mean and standard deviation, load-elongation curves and observed failure modes.

of Europe - Standardization (ASD-STAN).

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.

bearing stress at a given moment during the test
load experienced by the test specimen at a particular moment divided by the nominal bolt-diameter and
the specimen thickness

yield bearing strength
bearing stress which results in a 0,02 times the diameter permanent set of the joint
3.3
ultimate bearing strength
bearing stress at the maximum load during the test (see Figure 1)

4 Principle of the method
A tensile test is carried out on a flat laminate containing a hole; the load is applied by a bolt passing
through the hole. A large specimen width is chosen, so that bearing failure occurs. The yield and ultimate
bearing strengths are determined.
