What are the key requirements of EN ISO 6599-1:2026?
Conditioning atmosphere
Clause 4 requires empty sacks to be exposed until they reach temperature and moisture equilibrium with the conditioning atmosphere. In practice, this means the sacks must be allowed to stabilize before testing, so test results reflect a known moisture state rather than recent storage conditions.
Unless another specification, test method, or agreement between the parties says otherwise, the preferred atmosphere is 23/50. Table 1 also allows 27/65 where climate at the test location makes that necessary, and 20/65 as another suitable atmosphere. This matters because the chosen atmosphere affects paper moisture content and therefore test results.
If the test concerns only the paper material, not the sack as such, the document says the cut-out samples are conditioned according to ISO 187. That keeps paper tests aligned with the standard atmosphere used for paper, board and pulps.
Equipment and monitoring
Clause 5 requires the conditioning room to have automatic equipment that brings the air to standard temperature and relative humidity and circulates it so conditions stay uniform. A recording hygrometer should be kept in the room for checking and should be periodically calibrated. In practice, that means the laboratory needs stable, monitored conditions, not just a room with a nominal setpoint.
The document also directs users to ISO 187:2022, Annex B, for the conditioning room and to ISO 187:2022, Annex A.3, for temperature and relative humidity data. This links the sack-conditioning process to established measurement practice.
Procedure and minimum times
Clause 6 says sacks shall be suspended so conditioning air can circulate freely to all outer surfaces, and, for open-mouth sacks, to as much of the inner surface of the innermost ply as possible. If the sack will be filled after conditioning, additional moisture equilibration may be needed.
Preconditioning is to be omitted. The document also sets minimum conditioning periods: at least 24 h for sacks without barrier plies, and at least 7 days for sacks with one or more barrier plies. For users, these times set the minimum waiting period before testing can start.
Test reporting
Clause 7 requires the test report to identify the sample, the conditioning atmosphere used, the time taken to condition the sacks, the reference to EN ISO 6599-1:2026, the results with the calculation clause referenced, any deviations, unusual features, and the test date. This is the information needed to compare results and trace how the sample was conditioned.
