This document specifies the mechanical and physical properties of nuts made of non-alloy steel or alloy steel, when tested at the ambient temperature range of 10 °C to 35 °C.
This document applies to nuts:
— with ISO metric thread (see ISO 68-1),
— with diameter/pitch combinations according to ISO 261 and ISO 262,
— with coarse pitch thread M5 to M39, and fine pitch thread M8×1 to M39×3,
— with thread tolerances according to ISO 965-1, ISO 965-2 or ISO 965-5,
— with specified property classes 04, 05, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12 including proof load,
— of three different nut styles (see 5.1): regular nuts (style 1), high nuts (style 2) and thin nuts (style 0),
— with a minimum outside diameter or width across flats s ≥ 1,45D,
— able to mate with bolts, screws and studs with property classes in accordance with ISO 898-1 (see Annex B), and

WARNING — Nuts conforming to the requirements of this document are tested at the ambient temperature range of 10 °C to 35 °C and are used in applications ranging from –50 °C to +150 °C; however, these nuts are also used outside this range and up to +300 °C for specific applications. It is possible that they do not retain the specified mechanical and physical properties at lower and/or elevated temperatures. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the user to determine the appropriate choices based on the service environment conditions of the assembly (see also 7.1).

This document does not specify requirements for functional properties such as:

This document specifies the mechanical and physical properties of nuts, with coarse pitch thread and fine pitch thread, made of corrosion-resistant stainless steels, when tested at the ambient temperature range of 10 °C to 35 °C. It specifies property classes in relation to austenitic, martensitic, ferritic and duplex (austenitic-ferritic) steel grades for nuts.
ISO 3506‑6 provides general rules and additional technical information on suitable stainless steels and their properties.
Nuts conforming to the requirements of this document are evaluated at the ambient temperature specified in paragraph 1. It is possible that they do not retain the specified mechanical and physical properties at elevated and/or lower temperatures.
NOTE 1 Fasteners conforming to the requirements of this document are used without restriction in applications ranging from ?20 °C to +150 °C; however, fasteners conforming to this document are also used for applications outside this range down to ?196 °C and up to +300 °C. For more details, see ISO 3506-6.
Outside the temperature range of ?20 °C to +150 °C, it is the responsibility of the user to determine the appropriate choice for a given application, in consultation with an experienced fastener metallurgist and by taking into account e.g. stainless steel composition, duration of exposure at elevated or low temperature, the effect of the temperature on the fastener mechanical properties and clamped parts, and the corrosive service environment of the bolted joint.
NOTE 2 ISO 3506‑5[1] is developed in order to assist in the selection of appropriate stainless steel grades and property classes intended for use at temperatures up to +800 °C.
This document applies to nuts:
— with ISO metric thread in accordance with ISO 68‑1,
— with diameter/pitch combinations in accordance with ISO 261 and ISO 262,
— with coarse pitch thread M5 to M39, and fine pitch thread M8×1 to M39×3,
— with thread tolerances in accordance with ISO 965‑1 and ISO 965‑2,
— with specified property classes, including proof load,
— with different nut styles: thin nuts, regular nuts and high nuts,
— with a minimum nut height m ≥ 0,45D,
— with a minimum outside diameter or width across flats s ≥ 1,45D (see Annex A),
— of any shape, and
— able to mate with bolts, screws and studs with property classes in accordance with ISO 3506‑1.
Stainless steel grades and property classes can be used for sizes outside the diameter limits of this document (i.e. for D < 5 mm or D > 39 mm), provided that all applicable chemical, mechanical and physical requirements are met.
This document does not specify requirements for functional properties such as:
— torque/clamp force properties,
— prevailing torque properties, or
— weldability.

This document specifies mechanical and physical properties of flat washers, designed to be used in bolted joints in combination with bolts, screws, studs and nuts with a specified property class in accordance with ISO 898‑1 and ISO 898‑2.
NOTE 1 These types of washers can also be used with other fasteners such as screws forming their own mating thread.
Washers that conform to the requirements of this document are evaluated at an ambient temperature range of 10 °C to 35 °C. They might not retain the specified mechanical and physical properties at elevated temperatures and/or lower temperatures.
NOTE 2 Washers conforming to the requirements of this document are used in applications ranging from −50 °C to +150 °C. Users are advised to consult an experienced fastener expert for temperatures outside this range and up to a maximum temperature of +300 °C when determining appropriate choices, or for critical applications.
This document is applicable to the following flat captive and non-captive washers made of carbon steel or alloy steel, with thickness from 0,2 mm to 12 mm:
— plain washers (with or without knurls, ribs or chamfers);
— square washers;
— square hole washers;
— shaped plates.
It does not specify requirements for the following properties:
— corrosion resistance;
— weldability.

ISO 2320:2015 specifies the functional properties for prevailing torque steel nuts when tested at an ambient temperature range of +10 °C to +35 °C. It includes a combined test method to determine the prevailing torque properties and the torque/clamp force properties at the same time.
It applies to prevailing torque all metal type nuts and prevailing torque non-metallic insert type nuts:
- with triangular ISO thread in accordance with ISO 68‑1;
- with diameter/pitch combination in accordance with ISO 261 and ISO 262;
- with coarse pitch thread M5 to M39 or with fine pitch thread M8 × 1 to M39 × 3;
- with thread tolerances in accordance with ISO 965-2;
- with mechanical properties in accordance with ISO 898‑2;
Prevailing torque values specified in this standard are based on laboratory test conditions.
NOTE 1 Actual prevailing torques in practical application can vary.
NOTE 2 All metal type nuts conforming to the requirements of this International Standard are used in applications ranging from −50 °C to +150 °C.
NOTE 3 Non-metallic insert type nuts conforming to the requirements of this International Standard are used in applications ranging from −50 °C to +120 °C.

This European Standard specifies, together with EN 14399 1 and EN 14399 2, the requirements for assemblies of high-strength structural bolts and nuts of system HR suitable for preloaded joints with large widths across flats, thread sizes M12 to M36 and property classes 8.8/8 or 8.8/10 and 10.9/10.
Bolting assemblies in accordance with this document have been designed to allow preloading of at least 0,7 fub × As ) according to EN 1993 1 8 (Eurocode 3) and to obtain ductility predominantly by plastic elongation of the bolt. For this purpose the components have the following characteristics:
- normal nut height (style 1), see EN ISO 4032;
- thread length of the bolt according to ISO 888.
Bolting assemblies in accordance with this document include washers according to EN 14399 6 or to EN 14399 5 (under the nut only).
NOTE Attention is drawn to the importance of ensuring that bolting assemblies are correctly used if satisfactory results are to be obtained. For recommendations concerning proper application, reference to EN 1090-2 is made.
General requirements and requirements for suitability for preloading are specified in EN 14399 2.
Clamp lengths and grip lengths for the bolting assemblies are specified in the normative Annex A.

ISO 21670:2014 specifies characteristics for hexagon weld nuts with flange, with sizes M5 to M16 (coarse thread) or d = 8 mm to 16 mm (fine pitch thread), of product grade A. Weld nuts conforming to ISO 21670:2014 are suitable for use with bolts of property classes up to 10.9 according to ISO 898‑1.
