Overview
EN ISO 6149-4:2017 specifies the dimensions, design, test methods and performance requirements for external hex and internal hex port plugs intended for use with ISO 6149‑1 ports in fluid power and general applications. The document covers metric screw threads per ISO 261 with O‑ring sealing, and is intended for components used at working pressures up to 63 MPa (630 bar) (permissible pressure depends on size, materials and application). The standard also includes important safety guidance about intermixing types of ports and stud ends.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Port plug types: external hex (hexagon head) and internal hex (Allen) port plugs designed to fit ISO 6149‑1 ports.
- Threads: metric screw threads conforming to ISO 261, tolerance class 6g.
- Dimensions & tolerances: plug dimensions shown in figures/tables of the standard; hex tolerances referenced to ISO 4759‑1 (external hex product grade C, internal hex product grade A). Minimum geometric relationships include across-corner and side-flat proportions. External hex corners are chamfered 10°–30°.
- Sealing: plugs may use elastomeric O‑rings (referenced quality and acceptance criteria such as ISO 3601‑3).
- Performance & testing: specifies working pressure/temperature suitability (typical range −40 °C to +120 °C). Conformance to dimensions alone does not guarantee rated performance-manufacturers must perform the tests described in the standard to verify performance.
- Safety warning: mixing stud ends or ports conforming to ISO 6149‑4 with ports from ISO 1179, ISO 9974, ISO 11926 can create hazardous situations.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Hydraulic and fluid power system designers and OEMs specifying threaded port plugs for manifolds, valves, pumps, reservoirs and general hydraulic equipment.
- Manufacturers and quality engineers producing or testing external hex/internal hex port plugs to ensure dimensional and performance compliance.
- Procurement/specification engineers and test laboratories validating working pressure, temperature and sealing performance.
- Maintenance teams and safety officers assessing compatibility risks when replacing plugs or interfacing different port standards.

- ISO 6149‑2 (stud ends)
- ISO 261 (metric screw threads)
- ISO 3601‑3 (O‑ring acceptance)
- ISO 4759‑1 (fastener tolerances)

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/ directives).
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. Details of
any patent rights identified during the development of the document will be in the Introduction and/or
on the ISO list of patent declarations received (see www .iso .org/ patents).

This document was prepared by ISO/TC 131, Fluid power systems, SC 4, Connectors and similar products
and components.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 6149-4:2006), of which it constitutes a
minor revision.
The main change since last version is the addition of a warning statement about the hazards of
intermixing of stud ends with the various port types.

ISO 6149-4:2017(E)
Introduction
In fluid power systems, power is transmitted and controlled through a fluid (liquid or gas) under
pressure within an enclosed circuit. In general applications, a fluid can be conveyed under pressure.
Components are connected through their threaded ports by stud ends on fluid conductor connectors to
tubes and pipes or to hose fittings and hoses. Fluid ports are closed by inserting a plug in the port.

This document specifies dimensions and performance requirements for external hex and internal hex
port plugs for use with ISO 6149-1 ports.
1)
Port plugs in accordance with this document can be used at working pressures up to 63 MPa (630 bar ).
The permissible working pressure depends upon the plug end size, materials, design, working
conditions, application, etc.
Conformance to the dimensional information in this document does not guarantee rated performance.
Each manufacturer is expected to perform testing according to the specification contained in this
document to assure that components comply with the performance ratings.
WARNING — The use of stud ends conforming to this document with ports conforming to the
relevant parts of ISO 1179, ISO 9974 and ISO 11926 could lead to a hazardous situation.
