Flexible sheets for waterproofing - Bitumen sheets for roof waterproofing - Determination of flexibility at low temperature

This European Standard specifies the determination of flexibility of bitumen sheets at low temperatures. The test can be carried out on the upper or lower face of the sheet either at a predetermined temperature or successively at different temperature steps to determine the cold bending temperature which represents a limiting temperature. Therefore, the test can be used to confirm a minimum cold bending temperature for a product or to determine the specific cold bending temperature for the product e.g. to determine the change of these properties as a result of artificial ageing.
In the case of sheets with the same bituminous compound on both sides and where the reinforcement is placed in the cross section visually closer to the upper surface, the test is performed on the bottom face only.
If the upper surface is covered with a non woven (e.g. tissue, fleece etc.) or metal facing, the test is performed on the bottom side only.
If the sheet on the upper surface is covered with permanent light surface protection and where the reinforcement is placed in the cross section visually closer to the upper surface, the test is performed on the bottom side only.

Overview

EN 1109:2013 is a European Standard developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) that specifies a test method for determining the flexibility of bitumen sheets used for roof waterproofing at low temperatures. This standard focuses on assessing the cold bending properties of bitumen waterproofing sheets to ensure their performance under cold weather conditions. It replaces EN 1109:1999 and introduces updates such as the use of a single coolant to improve test reliability.

Bitumen sheets are a critical component in roof waterproofing systems, providing essential protection against water ingress. Flexibility at low temperature is a key property that affects the durability and service life of bitumen sheet membranes, especially in cold climates.

Key Topics

  • Scope
Defines the method for evaluating the flexibility of bitumen sheets by bending specimens at controlled low temperatures to detect cracking.

  • Test Principle
Bitumen sheet specimens are bent 180° around a mandrel submerged in a temperature-controlled coolant bath. The samples are visually inspected for cracks to determine if the material maintains flexibility without failure.

  • Test Conditions

    • Testing on either the upper or lower surface depending on the reinforcement and surface treatment.
    • Conditioning of samples at the target temperature for one hour before bending.
    • Cooling media specified as ethylene glycol/water or ethanol/water mixtures depending on the temperature range and sheet type.
  • Flexibility and Cold Bending Temperature

    • Flexibility is defined as the ability to bend without cracking.
    • Cold bending temperature is the lowest temperature at which the bitumen sheet can be bent without cracking, representing a limiting temperature for performance.
  • Apparatus
Includes a mechanical bending device with fixed cylinders and a bending mandrel, immersed in a thermostatic bath maintaining temperatures from +20 °C to –40 °C.

  • Sampling and Specimen Preparation
Samples are taken according to EN 13416, avoiding edges and ensuring uniformity. Protective films are carefully removed without heat application, and specimens are conditioned prior to testing.

  • Result Evaluation
The standard requires testing five specimens per face, with flexibility confirmed if at least four specimens show no cracks.

  • Precision and Repeatability
The method includes guidance on repeatability and reproducibility based on interlaboratory studies per ISO 5725-1.

Applications

  • Roof Waterproofing Quality Control
EN 1109:2013 provides manufacturers, testing laboratories, and quality control personnel with a standardized method to verify the low-temperature flexibility of bitumen sheets used in roofing waterproofing systems.

  • Product Development and Classification
This standard helps characterize bitumen sheets during product development, ensuring that materials meet performance criteria for cold climate applications.

  • Aging and Durability Assessment
By determining changes in cold bending temperature before and after artificial aging, manufacturers can assess the impact of environmental exposure on flexibility.

  • Compliance and Certification
Compliance with EN 1109:2013 is essential for products marketed in European countries, ensuring conformity with harmonized European product specifications for waterproofing sheets.

Related Standards

  • EN 13416 - Flexible sheets for waterproofing - Rules for sampling bitumen sheets
Provides guidelines on sample selection, ensuring representativeness for testing flexibility under EN 1109.

Introduction This European Standard is intended for the characterisation and/or classification of bitumen sheets as manufactured or supplied before use. The test method relates exclusively to products, or to their components where appropriate, and not to waterproofing systems of such products and installed in the works. This test is intended to be used in conjunctions within the relevant European products specifications for bitumen flexible sheets for waterproofing. The test for flexibility at a low temperature is intended to determine the susceptibility to cracking of the bituminous coating on a sheet when bent under specified conditions. The test result is dependent on the type of coating, on the thickness of the sheet, type and position of the reinforcement and the behaviour of the surface material. The use of the test results directly to compare the performance of coatings in sheets of different composition is strictly limited because of the influence of parameters which have not been quantified. Only the results from sheets with the same composition can be used to compare the performance directly. The test primarily serves to characterise bitumen sheets. It can be used to evaluate the change in the cold bending behaviour during artificial ageing. It is not safe to relate the test results to the actual performance to be expected at low temperatures in service. Compared to EN 1109:1999, in this new version of EN 1109 one type of coolant is described, which will give more reliable results. SIST EN 1109:2013

The article discusses the European standard EN 1109:2013, which determines the flexibility of bitumen sheets used for roof waterproofing at low temperatures. The test can be conducted on either the upper or lower face of the sheet, at a set temperature or gradually at different temperature levels. This test helps determine the cold bending temperature, which is the temperature at which the sheet reaches its limit of flexibility. The test is used to confirm the minimum cold bending temperature required for a product, or to assess any changes in flexibility due to aging. The article also mentions specific scenarios where the test is performed only on the bottom side of the sheet, such as when both sides have the same bituminous compound, or when the upper surface is covered with non-woven material, metal facing, or a permanent light surface protection.
