Overview
EN ISO 8751:2007 is a European and international standard governing the specifications for coiled, light duty spring-type straight pins. These pins are manufactured from steel or stainless steel (austenitic or martensitic) and have nominal diameters ranging from 1.5 mm to 8 mm inclusive. This third edition, published in 2007, supersedes the previous 1997 version and ensures consistent product quality, dimensions, and performance criteria across industries using these fasteners.
The standard is critical for manufacturers, engineers, and quality assurance professionals involved in the production and application of precision fasteners. It ensures reliability, interchangeability, and safety in mechanical assemblies where light duty spring pins are employed.
Key Topics
- Scope and Applicability: Specifies the characteristics related to dimensions, materials, mechanical properties, and workmanship of light duty coiled spring pins.
- Materials and Hardness: Includes requirements for steel, austenitic stainless steel, and martensitic stainless steel variants, with specified hardness values tested per ISO 6507-1.
- Dimensions and Tolerances: Defines nominal diameters from 1.5 mm to 8 mm with detailed tolerance grades based on ISO 286-2 for hole fits (tolerance class H12).
- Mechanical Properties: Minimum shear strength values are established differently for steel types, ensuring performance under load.
- Surface Finish and Coating: Pins are supplied plain or with protective lubricants. Recommendations regarding electroplating and phosphate coating consider hydrogen embrittlement risks, referencing ISO 4042 for surface treatment relief.
- Testing and Acceptance: Compliance is verified using standardized shear testing (ISO 8749) and acceptance inspection procedures (ISO 3269).
- Designation System: A clear method for pin identification includes pin type, diameter, length, and material code (e.g., Steel - St, Austenitic stainless steel - A).
Applications
Light duty coiled spring-type straight pins covered by EN ISO 8751:2007 are widely used in industries requiring reliable, precision fasteners for mechanical assemblies with moderate load requirements. Typical applications include:
- Automotive Components: Securing parts that require easy assembly and disassembly while maintaining alignment.
- Machinery and Equipment: Positioning and locking of shafts, gears, and levers with smooth operational tolerance fits.
- Electronics and Electrical Devices: Providing precise but slightly flexible fastening solutions in compact mechanical parts.
- Aerospace and Defense: Lightweight, corrosion-resistant pins for assemblies where durability and quality control are critical.
- General Manufacturing: Utilized wherever precision fasteners with standardized performance and dimensions are preferred for fastening and aligning components.
Related Standards
EN ISO 8751:2007 closely relates to the following standards, which cover other types and duties of spring pins and relevant fastener requirements:
- ISO 8748 – Spring-type straight pins - Coiled, heavy duty.
- ISO 8750 – Spring-type straight pins - Coiled, standard duty.
- ISO 286-2 – System of limits and fits, setting tolerance grades for mating parts.
- ISO 4042 – Requirements for electroplated coatings, particularly addressing hydrogen embrittlement relief.
- ISO 6507-1 – Vickers hardness testing method applicable to verifying material hardness.
- ISO 8749 – Shear test method for pins.
- ISO 3269 – Acceptance inspection for fasteners.
Practical Value
EN ISO 8751:2007 provides standardized technical specifications ensuring the reliable selection, application, and quality assurance of light duty coiled spring pins. This minimizes the risks of assembly failure, improves interchangeability among manufacturers, and supports international trade and compliance. By following this standard, companies can achieve uniform product performance, avoid costly non-conformities, and enhance product lifecycle in various engineering applications.
