Overview
prEN 50377-15-1 is a draft CLC product specification for 12‑fibre MPO connector sets terminated with PPS ferrules on EN 60793-2 category A1a 50/125 µm multimode (macrobend‑enhanced) fibre. The document defines the initial start‑of‑life dimensional, optical, mechanical and environmental requirements that a terminated plug–adapter–plug MPO assembly must meet to be classified as an EN standard product. It is intended to ensure supplier‑independent intermateability and predictable performance in indoor backplane/back‑panel customer premises environments.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Product definition and scope
- Terminated and assembled 12‑fibre MPO (plug / adapter / plug) with rectangular, spring‑loaded ferrule and precision pin/hole alignment.
- Specifically for 50/125 µm macrobend‑enhanced multimode fibre (EN 60793‑2 category A1a as referenced in the draft).
- Intermateability
- Requirements ensure all compliant products will intermate and meet specified random attenuation and return‑loss performance irrespective of manufacturer.
- Performance parameters
- Start‑of‑life dimensional limits (outline and mating‑face geometry, ferrule end‑face parameters).
- Optical metrics (random mated attenuation, return loss grades, end‑face polish/physical contact).
- Mechanical tests (mating durability, vibration, impact, tensile/cable retention, torsion, strain‑relief flexing).
- Environmental tests (temperature extremes, damp heat, change of temperature, static side load).
- Testing and qualification
- Test methods drawn from EN 61300 series (e.g., vibration, mating durability, attenuation of random mated connectors, return loss).
- Sample size, pass/fail criteria, and product qualification requirements for dimensional, optical, mechanical and environmental performance.
- Marking and variants
- Rules for variant identification and product marking to accommodate permitted product variants.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Manufacturers of MPO connectors, ferrules and adapter assemblies - for product design, verification and conformity claims.
- Component suppliers and system integrators specifying high‑density multimode interconnects in indoor protected environments (backplanes, patch panels, equipment panels).
- Test laboratories and quality/qualification teams applying EN/IEC test methods to certify start‑of‑life performance and intermateability.
- Procurement and standards engineers writing technical specifications for multimode MPO assemblies where macrobend performance is required.

123 4 General
124 4.1 Description
125 The MPO connector is a single position plug connector set of plug adapter plug configuration characterized by
126 a spring-loaded butting rectangular ferrule with twelve optical fibres and a push-pull coupling mechanism. The
127 optical alignment mechanism of the connectors is of precision pin and hole type.
128 4.2 Plug
129 The plug features a rectangular thermo plastic composite ferrule and a push-pull coupling mechanism.
130 A cover (dust cap) to protect the ferrule end face when the connector is in the unmated condition shall be
131 provided.
132 4.3 Adapter
133 The adapter has no role in the final alignment mechanism. The mounting style is
134 — rectangular flange - 2 holes.
135 Covers (dust caps) may be provided to protect each port of the adapter.
136 4.4 Materials
137 Materials which are not specified or which are not specifically described are left to the discretion of the
138 manufacturer.
139 The material for the ferrule is Polyphenylene Sulphide (PPS) with a Young’s modulus of 20 GPa nominal. The
140 guide pins are made of stainless steel. Alternative materials, which have compatible material properties, may
141 be used as long as end face and performance requirements are met under all conditions as specified in this
142 document.
143 4.5 Dimensions
144 Outline dimensions and other dimensions necessary to ensure intermateability or which affect performance
145 are specified. All other dimensions are left to the discretion of the manufacturer. Where the mating face limit
146 dimensions are not in agreement with the IEC interface this is clearly stated.
147 4.6 Colour and marking
148 Marking of the product shall be in the following order of precedence:
149 a) identification of manufacturer;
150 b) manufacturing date code: year/week;
151 c) manufacturers part number;
152 d) variant identification number.

Each pin-hole shall accept a gauge pin as shown in Figure 8 to a depth of 5,5 mm with a maximum force of 1,7 N. In addition,
two pin-holes of a plug shall accept a gauge as shown in Figure 9 to a depth of 5,5 mm with a maximum force of 3,4 N.
b
Dimension C is defined as the distance between two pin-hole centres.
c
Dimension I is given for a fibre end face centre of a plug end when not mated. It is noticed that a ferrule is movable by a
certain axial compression force, and therefore the dimension I is variable. Ferrule compression force shall be 7,8 N to 11,8 N
when the position of the fibre end face from the datum Z is in the range of 8,2 mm to 8,4 mm.
d
Coupling sleeve shall be movable by a certain axial compression force. Dimension L is given for a coupling sleeve end when
not mated. Coupling sleeve compression force shall be 2,9 N to 6,9 N when the position of the coupling sleeve end face from
datum Z is in the range of 0 mm to 0,1 mm to the right or to the left of datum Z.
e
The plug shall be uncoupled from the adaptor when the end face of the coupling sleeve is moved by a distance greater than
2mm to the left of datum Z.

190 The MPO Plug fibres are located in the positions in Figure 7:
192 NOTE 1 The optical datum target diagram is shown in the figure. The optical datum targets are located on a line X
193 passing through the two pin-hole centres and located on or symmetrically about a line Y perpendicular to line X located
194 midway between the two pin-hole centres.
