Overview

prEN IEC 60068-2-67:2026 is a draft international standard developed by CLC and IEC, specifying methods for accelerated environmental testing of small electrotechnical products and components under prolonged damp heat conditions. Referred to as Test Cy, this procedure is primarily intended for non-hermetically sealed components to assess their resistance to damp heat without inducing condensation. Accelerated testing according to this standard helps manufacturers evaluate component durability and reliability in environments characterized by high humidity and steady temperature over extended periods.

Key Topics

  • Accelerated Damp Heat Test (Test Cy):
Focuses on exposing components to a controlled, steady-state environment with high humidity and temperature for up to 2,000 hours. The procedure aims to simulate and accelerate real-world environmental stresses.

  • Test Chamber Requirements:
The standard outlines clear requirements for the construction and operation of the environmental test chamber, including:

    • Uniform temperature and humidity distribution,
    • Prevention of condensation on specimens,
    • Usage of distilled or deionized water for humidification.
  • Pre-conditioning and Testing Procedures:
Components must undergo pre-conditioning to prevent condensation before the test cycle begins. The standard specifies stabilization periods, humidity and temperature ranges, and duration options to suit various component types and applications.

  • Specimen Handling and Mounting:
Guidance is provided on correct specimen placement, mounting structures, and precautions to minimize contamination and self-heating.

  • Measurements and Reporting:
Prescribes initial, intermediate, and final inspections and measurements (visual, electrical, and mechanical), as well as comprehensive information required for test reports to ensure traceability and repeatability.

Applications

prEN IEC 60068-2-67:2026 offers practical value for manufacturers and testing laboratories involved in the qualification and reliability assessment of electronic and electrical components, especially those used in high-humidity environments. Common applications include:

  • Quality Assurance:
Evaluating component resistance to humidity-induced degradation such as moisture ingress and water vapor penetration, which can impact the lifespan and function of non-hermetically sealed products.

  • Product Development and Qualification:
Early identification of failure modes related to damp heat in semiconductors, plastic encapsulated components, and other sensitive devices-crucial for reliability engineering and product improvement.

  • Conformity Assessment:
Supporting third-party laboratories and end users in verifying compliance with international quality and performance expectations for electrotechnical products.

  • Failure Analysis:
Test results help determine the physical significance of moisture-induced failure mechanisms, aiding in root cause analysis and corrective actions.

Related Standards

Testing in accordance with prEN IEC 60068-2-67:2026 is part of the broader IEC 60068 series dedicated to environmental testing. Relevant related standards include:

  • IEC 60068-1:
Environmental testing - Part 1: General and guidance

  • IEC 60068-3-4:
Supporting documentation for damp heat tests

  • IEC 60068-3-6:
Confirmation of the performance of temperature/humidity chambers

  • IEC 60068-3-7:
Measurements in temperature chambers for cold and dry heat tests

These documents provide additional guidance for test method selection, equipment validation, and measurement procedures, ensuring a consistent approach to environmental testing and quality assurance.

For laboratories and product manufacturers, adopting prEN IEC 60068-2-67:2026 ensures rigorous assessment under accelerated damp heat conditions, providing confidence in component reliability and supporting international market access.

organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as
possible, an international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical
committee has representation from all interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted
by IEC National Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that
the technical content of IEC Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the
way in which they are used or for any misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC
Publications transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional
publications. Any divergence between any IEC Publication and the corres ponding national or
regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies
provide conformity assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity.
IEC is not responsible for any services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including
individual experts and members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for
any personal injury, property damage or other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct
or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and expenses arising out of the publication, use
of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC Publications.

publications is indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) IEC draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve
the use of (a) patent(s). IEC takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability
of any claimed patent rights in respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document,
IEC had not received notice of (a) patent(s), which may be required to implement this document.

b) inclusion of the dew point temperatures;
c) change of the temperature and humidity tolerances to limits;
d) inclusion of a specified pre-conditioning procedure;
e) revision of the standardized requirements for the relevant specification;
f) inclusion of standardized requirements for the test report.

1 Scope
This part of IEC 60068 provides a standard test procedure for the purpose of evaluating, in an
accelerated manner, the resistance of small electrotechnical products, primarily non
hermetically sealed components, to the deteriorative effect of damp heat without condensation
on a specimen.
The test is not intended to evaluate external effects such as corrosion and deformation.
NOTE For further information on damp heat tests, see IEC 60068-3-4 [1].

4 General test procedure
4.1 General
In this test the specimen is subjected to very high levels of unsaturated damp heat for a
relatively long period. If required by the relevant specification the specimen shall have a bias
voltage applied during testing. Guidance on the application of bias is given in Clause A.1.
The bias voltage (or bias voltage cycle) shall be applied to the specimen when the temperature
and the relative humidity have reached the stable state and continue until the specimen is under
recovery conditions.
In the case of plastic encapsulated components degradation results from absorption of water -
vapour by the plastic and penetration of moisture along terminals (see Annex B).
The temperature and relative humidity limits given in this document are intended to take into
account errors in the measurement, slow changes of temperature, and temperature variations
of the working space.
NOTE 1 For further information on the working space, see IEC 60068-3-6 [2] .
The temperature and relative humidity refer to the control sensor of the test chamber, if not
specified otherwise.
The limits stated in this document do not take measurements uncertainty into consideration.
IEC CDV 60068-2-67 © IEC 2026
NOTE 2 The limits are valid for an empty test space during stabilized temperature/humidity conditions of the test.
In some conditions, where the specimen has a negligible impact on the chamber control, the limits can still
