Any divergencebetween the I EC recommendation and the corresponding national rules should, as far as possible, be clearly indicatedin the latter.PREFACEThis standard has been prepared by Sub-Committee 60A, Sound Recording, of IEC Technical Committee No. 60,Recording.A first draft was discussed at the meeting held in Paris in 1975. As a result of this meeting, a draft, Document 60A(CentralOffice)43, was submitted to the National Committees for approval under the Six Months' Rule in July 1976.Amendments, Document 60A(Central Office)47, were submitted to the National Committees for approval under theTwo Months' Procedure in September 1977.The following countries voted explicitly in favour of publication:SIST EN 60094-3:1999

-9—MAGNETIC TAPE SOUND RECORDING AND REPRODUCING SYSTEMSPart 3 : Methods of measuring the characteristics of recording and reproducingequipment for sound on magnetic tapeSECTION ONE — INTRODUCTION1.ScopeThis standard applies to recording and reproducing equipment for sound on magnetic tape(reel-to-reel, cassette and cartridge) for both professional and domestic applications, and will bereferred to as "equipment" throughout this standard. This standard does not apply to special purpose equipment such as high speed duplicators, artificial reverberation recorders or dictation machines not employing the reel-to-reel, cassette orcartridge principle. This standard excludes all aspects of safety, which are to be found in I E CPublication 65, Safety Requirements for Mains Operated Electronic and Related Apparatus forHousehold and Similar General Use. It also excludes magnetic tape properties, which are to befound in IEC Publications 94-4 and 94-5 (in preparation).2.ObjectThe object of this standard is to list and define parameters affecting the performance of recordingand reproducing equipment for sound on magnetic tape, and to establish conditions and agreedmethods of measurement of these parameters.SECTION TWO — GENERAL NOTES ON MEASUREMENTS3.Information to be supplied by manufacturer of equipmentThe information required is listed in this section. It falls into two distinct categories:—mandatory information to be clearly shown on the equipment, indicated by an "A" on theright-hand side of the page;—optional information to be given separately, e.g. in an instruction manual relating to and suppliedwith the equipment. It is essential that mandatory information outside the scope of this standard (e.g. aspects ofsafety — IEC Publication 65) shall also be given in the correct location.4. For the purpose of this clause, an"adjustable" control shall be deemed to be one that is readily accessible to the user when the equip-ment is in its intended use. Its adjustment shall necessitate neither relocation of the equipment northe dismantling of any of its parts.6.Mechanical characteristics6.1 Space and support requirements during operation of equipmentCharacteristicsUnitsMinimum heightmmMinimum widthmmMinimum depthmmOperating positionhorizontal, vertical or otherTotal masskg6.2 Tape carrier and tapeUnitsType of tape carrier (e.g. cassette, cartridgeor reel-to-reel)Type of reel (e.g. Type II)Maximum reel diameter without overhangmmMaximum reel diameter with overhangmmTape widthmm6.3 Tape transport systemUnitRated speed(s)cm/sANote. — On multispeed equipment, the speeds may be marked with the first two digits of the rated speed, e.g. therated speed of 9.53 cm/s may be shown as "9.5". Further-more, some of these rated conditions must be related to a specified calibration or reference tape.SIST EN 60094-3:1999

— 15 —The following ratings are basic to the methods of measurement specified in this standard:Rated environmental conditions.Rated power supply.Rated recording level.Rated load impedance.Rated source impedance.Rated input electromotive force (e.m.f.).Rated output voltage.Rated bias setting. To obtain the correct conditions for measurement, the above-mentioned ratings shall be takenfrom the manufacturer's specification. These ratings themselves are not subject to measurement butthey constitute the basis for measuring the other characteristics. In order to achieve maximum interchangeability of equipment from different manufacturers, andin order to simplify the work of testing authorities, it is desirable that rated conditions should bestandardized so far as is possible. For the guidance of equipment manufacturers, preferred values or ranges are given in squarebrackets following each parameter.8.1 Rated environmental conditionsUnitsAmbient temperature20 +15 °CRelative humidity60 ± 15Air pressure 000 ± 10 000 PaMinimum stabilization time of equipment atambient temperature.8.2 Rated power supplyUnitsType of supply(ies) (e.g. a.c.)Agsee IECVolta e sAPublication 38* V Frequency(ies)HzA8.3 Interface dataSpecified calibration tape.Specified reference tape.Manufacturer and identification details of tape housing(cassette and cartridge equipment only).Rated bias setting for specified reference tape.* IEC Standard Voltages.SIST EN 60094-3:1999

Unless otherwise specified in Sub-clauses 9.1 or 9.2 (for example maximum orminimum values), a tolerance shall be allocated to each parameter. If a manufacturer claims rated power supply voltage tolerances exceeding ±10%, then the charac-teristics to be specified shall also be stated for the upper and lower limits of these tolerances. If variations in frequency of the rated power supply, within tolerances specified by the manu
