Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components - Basic test and measurement procedures - Part 2-42: Tests - Static side load for strain relief

IEC 61300-2-42:2014 specifies a test to determine the influence of a side load applied to a cord assembled with a strain relief. The intention is to simulate a static load, due to a length of fibre cable, which would typically be experienced during service. Components should withstand side loads during optical transmission without degradation of the optical performance. Besides a boot, any feature that controls the bending radius of the fibre can be considered as strain relief. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2005 and constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical change with respect to the previous edition: modification of the severity according to cable configurations. Keywords: side load, static load, optical performance, strain relief

EN 61300-2-42:2014 - Static side load for strain relief (Overview)

EN 61300-2-42:2014 (identical to IEC 61300-2-42:2014) specifies a standardized test to evaluate the effect of a static side load on fibre optic cords assembled with a strain relief. The test simulates the static pull and bending caused by several metres of cable in service and verifies that components maintain acceptable optical performance (attenuation, return loss) while the side load is applied. This third edition replaces the 2005 version and updates severity levels according to cable configuration.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Applies to passive optical components that incorporate fibre cable pigtails or cords and where a strain relief (boot or any feature controlling bending radius) is present.
  • Test objective: Determine influence of a side load on optical attenuation and ensure no degradation during transmission.
  • Apparatus:
    • Load generator (mass + clamp) - clamp must not induce micro‑ or macro‑bending losses.
    • Holding fixture to secure the device under test, including adaptors for connectors and accommodation for co‑located input/output cables.
    • Optical source and detector in accordance with IEC 61300-3-4; continuous or time‑recorded attenuation monitoring.
  • Procedure highlights:
    • Pre‑conditioning at standard environmental conditions (2 hours unless otherwise specified).
    • Mount specimen, apply load at a specified point (typically 20–30 cm from the end of strain relief unless specified otherwise).
    • Record initial attenuation, monitor changes during load application, allow recovery, and perform final measurements and visual examination.
  • Severity: Test severity levels are defined and modified in this edition to reflect different cable configurations; Table of severities provides the load values and durations.

Practical applications and users

  • Who uses it:
    • Fibre optic connector and passive component manufacturers (design validation, production test).
    • Test laboratories and QA teams performing compliance and reliability testing.
    • Product designers and mechanical engineers verifying strain relief effectiveness.
    • Procurement and compliance officers specifying performance requirements in contracts and datasheets.
  • Why it matters:
    • Ensures connectors, pigtails and assemblies withstand realistic static loads without increased loss.
    • Helps minimize field failures caused by cable weight, routing, or improper support.
    • Supports product acceptance, certification and consistent optical performance in installations.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
