It applies to optical fibre cables for use with telecommunication equipment and devices employing similar techniques, and to cables having a combination of both optical fibres and electrical conductors.
Throughout this document the wording “optical cable” can also include optical fibre units, microduct fibre units, etc.
This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to Method E27 of IEC 60794-1-21:2015, and 60794-1-21:2015/AMD1:2020:
a) addition of a new Clause “11 Details to be reported.”

IEC 60794-1-127:2026 is an International Standard from IEC for a mechanical test on optical fibre cables. It specifies the indoor simulated installation test, method E27, to assess how cables behave around tight corners, attachment points, and cable storage conditions during indoor installation. It is written for optical fibre cables used with telecommunication equipment and similar devices, including cables that combine optical fibres and electrical conductors.
What does IEC 60794-1-127:2026 specify?
IEC 60794-1-127:2026 defines the test procedure, the sample and apparatus, the procedure to follow, and the information to state in the product specification and test report. The standard is organized into clauses for scope, normative references, terms and definitions, general requirements, object, sample, apparatus, procedure, requirements, details to be specified, and details to be reported.
The document uses the term “optical cable” broadly, and that wording can also cover optical fibre units and microduct fibre units. In practice, that makes the method useful beyond one narrow cable format.
What are the key requirements of IEC 60794-1-127:2026?
IEC 60794-1-127:2026 requires the sample to be long enough for the route used in the test, with a minimum length that should be 100 m. That matters because the test includes several bends, wraps, and attachment points, and the cable must still allow optical measurement throughout.
Test set-up and measurement
IEC 60794-1-127:2026 uses an apparatus that simulates installation around a wall stud, door, window, or similar obstacle. Figure 1 and Figure 2 show the indoor installation simulation apparatus and the stapling and bending fixture, and optical monitoring equipment is used in accordance with IEC 60793-1-46.
The initial attenuation is measured before the test, the fibres stay connected to the monitoring equipment throughout, and attenuation is measured again after the installation sequence. The result is the change in attenuation relative to the initial value, so the test checks whether the cable stays optically stable after mechanical handling.
Test sequence
IEC 60794-1-127:2026 runs the cable through a fixed sequence of indoor-installation-like stresses:
- fourteen 90° corner bends with minimal manual tension
- one 90° corner bend with sufficient load up to 2 kg to keep the cable vertical
- one 90° corner bend with the rated residual load
- two wraps on a 10 mm mandrel
- thirty attachment points, as specified in the relevant product specification
In practice, this sequence combines bending, load, wrapping, and fastening so the user can see whether the cable can tolerate common indoor routing features.
Attachment methods and stapling
IEC 60794-1-127:2026 allows attachment methods such as staples, adhesives, and cable ties, as long as they suit the substrate and local practice. If staples are used, they must be crowned or round staples with dimensions compatible with the cable size. This is important because poor fastening can create damage or false failures.
Acceptance and reporting
IEC 60794-1-127:2026 leaves the acceptance criteria to the relevant specification, but it points to typical failure modes such as physical damage, attenuation change beyond the limit, or loss of continuity. The report must include the details required by Clause 10, plus the test results and any deviation from the method.
The standard also gives typical stapling limits for attenuation change:
- 0,20 dB at 1 550 nm for a single-mode fibre
- 0,40 dB at 1 300 nm for a multimode fibre
These values help specifiers set practical pass/fail expectations for the stapling part of the test.
What terms does IEC 60794-1-127:2026 define?
- Optical cable - A cable used to carry optical fibres, and in this document the term can also cover optical fibre units and microduct fibre units.
- Attenuation - The optical loss measured before and after the test to show whether the cable performance changed.
- Residual load - The load that remains on the cable in the corner-bend part of the procedure, as stated for the test.
- Substrate - The support material, such as a wall stud or similar surface, on which the cable is fixed during the test.
- Mandrel - A cylindrical form used to make the cable wrap around a 10 mm diameter during the procedure.
- Single-mode fibre - A fibre type for which the document gives a stapling attenuation limit at 1 550 nm.
- Multimode fibre - A fibre type for which the document gives a stapling attenuation limit at 1 300 nm.
Who uses IEC 60794-1-127:2026?
IEC 60794-1-127:2026 is used by cable manufacturers, test laboratories, product specifiers, and quality or conformity assessment teams. It helps them check indoor cable robustness, define product acceptance criteria, and report results in a repeatable way.
It is also relevant to designers and buyers of optical fibre cables for indoor telecommunication installations, especially where routing around obstacles, fastening, and storage-like conditions matter.
What changed in IEC 60794-1-127:2026 from the previous edition?
IEC 60794-1-127:2026 replaces Method E27 of IEC 60794-1-21:2015 and IEC 60794-1-21:2015/AMD1:2020. The standard states that it is a technical revision, includes an editorial revision tied to the new structure and numbering system for optical fibre cable test methods, and adds a new Clause 11, “Details to be reported.”
Which standards are used with IEC 60794-1-127:2026?
- IEC 60794-1-1 - Supplies the general terms and definitions used for this family of optical fibre cable standards.
- IEC 60794-1-2 - Provides general guidance and the cross-reference details for the basic optical cable test methods.
- IEC 60793-1-46 - Gives the optical monitoring method used to measure changes in attenuation during the test.
- IEC 60794-1-21 - The earlier publication that contained Method E27 and is listed in the bibliography as the predecessor.
What does the IEC 60794-1-127:2026 document contain?
The document contains the full test method, including the purpose of the test, the sample length expectation, the apparatus description, the test sequence, and the reporting requirements. It also includes Figure 1 for the indoor installation simulation apparatus and Figure 2 for the stapling and bending test fixture.
Clause 8 describes the installation sequence step by step, and Clause 9 states how the result is judged in relation to the relevant specification. Clause 10 tells the user what the product specification must state, and Clause 11 tells the user what the test report must include.
