Overview
IEC 60335-2-68:2002/AMD1:2005 is an important amendment to the international standard covering the safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances. Specifically, this amendment addresses particular safety and performance requirements for spray extraction appliances designed for industrial and commercial use. Prepared by IEC Technical Committee 61, Subcommittee 61J, this document ensures enhanced safety protocols, durability, and operational reliability tailored to the unique demands of industrial cleaning applications.
Spray extraction appliances are widely used in commercial environments such as hotels, hospitals, schools, and factories. This amendment supplements the base standard by introducing specific tests, marking instructions, and design considerations to handle factors like electrical hazards, abrasion resistance of current-carrying hoses, and motorized cleaning heads.
Key Topics
Scope and Definitions
Updates include the definitions of water-suction cleaning appliances and motorized cleaning heads, which are critical components in spray extraction systems. The amendment also clarifies accessory power outlets and loading requirements.Marking and Instructions
Enhanced marking requirements specify the use of standardized symbols, including IEC 60417-5935 for motorized cleaning heads. Instruction manuals must prominently warn users on safe operation, such as avoiding contact between rotating brushes and supply cords, and provide sound pressure levels per IEC 60704-2-1. Clear guidance on disconnection procedures and foam escape precautions are mandatory for commercial appliances.Mechanical and Electrical Safety Tests
- Hose Resistance Tests: New testing apparatus and protocols ensure hoses are resistant to abrasion, flexing, crushing, torsion, and freezing conditions. Tests employ abrasive cloth belts, flexing mechanisms, and freezing treatments to simulate real-world stresses.
- Motorized Cleaning Heads: Subjected to impact, free-fall, moisture resistance, and electric strength tests to confirm durability and safety under operational and extreme conditions.
- Electrical Tests: Leakage current and electric strength tests include immersion of current-carrying hoses in saline solution, with specified voltage stresses to prevent electrical hazards.
Sound Emission and Noise Levels
Appliances must state A-weighted sound pressure levels to inform commercial users about noise emissions, identifying when hearing protection is necessary.Instruction Manual Requirements
Detailed guidance must be provided on hazardous conditions, safe maintenance practices, and proper appliance use, critical for commercial settings.
Applications
IEC 60335-2-68 Amendment 1 is essential for manufacturers and testing laboratories involved in the development, certification, and quality control of industrial and commercial spray extraction cleaning appliances. Its application ensures:
Enhanced Safety
Protection of users and maintenance personnel against electrical shocks, mechanical hazards, and operational failures.Reliability in Harsh Environments
Assuring appliance and accessory durability under conditions such as frequent flexing, temperature extremes, and exposure to detergents.Compliance with International Requirements
Facilitates market access in regions adhering to IEC standards by ensuring appliances meet recognized global benchmarks.User Guidance
Provides operators in commercial environments clear instructions to mitigate risks, promoting safer and more effective cleaning operations.
