FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization
for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two

The requirements of Part 7 supplement, modify or replace the general requirements of the
other parts of IEC 60364. The numbers following the particular number of section 702 are

those of the corresponding parts, chapters, sections or clauses of IEC 60364. The absence of

reference to a chapter, section or a clause means that the corresponding general requirements

are applicable.

702 Swimming pools and other basins

702.1 Scope, object and fundamental principles
702.11 Scope
The particular requirements of this Section apply to the basins of swimming pools, the basins
of fountains and the basins of paddling pools. They also apply to the surrounding zones of all
these basins. In these areas, in normal use, the effect of an electric shock is increased by a
reduction in body resistance and contact of the body with earth potential.
The requirements for swimming pools are applicable for paddling pools.
For swimming pools for medical use, special requirements may be necessary.
702.12 Normative references

702.2.21 Guide to general terms

For the purpose of this section of IEC 60364-7, the following definitions apply. For other

general definitions, see IEC 60364-2-21.

702.2.21.1
basin of fountain
Basin not intended to be occupied by persons.

For basins of fountains which are intended to be occupied by persons, the specifications and
requirements for swimming pools apply.
702.3 Assessment of general characteristics
702.32 Classification of external influences
These requirements are based on the dimensions of three zones (examples are given in
figures 702A, 702B, 702C, 702D and 702E).
a) Zone 0
This zone is the interior of the basins including any recesses in their walls or floors and
basins for foot cleaning or the interior of waterjets or waterfalls.
b) Zone 1
This zone is limited by
– zone 0;
– a vertical plane 2 m from the rim of the basin;
– the floor or the surface expected to be occupied by persons;
– the horizontal plane 2,5 m above the floor or the surface.
When the swimming pool contains diving boards, spring boards, starting blocks, chutes or
other components expected to be occupied by persons, zone 1 comprises the zone limited by
– a vertical plane situated 1,5 m around the diving boards, spring boards, starting blocks,
chutes and other components such as accessible sculptures and decorative basins;
– the horizontal plane 2,5 m above the highest surface intended to be occupied by persons.
c) Zone 2
This zone is limited by
– the vertical plane external to zone 1 and a parallel plane 1,5 m from the former;
– by the floor or surface intended to be occupied by persons and the horizontal plane 2,5 m
above the floor or surface.
There is no zone 2 for fountains.

702.411.1 Protection by extra low-voltage: SELV and PELV

702.411.1.4 Requirements for unearthed circuits (SELV)

702.411.1.4.3 Where SELV is used, whatever the nominal voltage, protection against direct

contact shall be provided by:
– barriers or enclosures affording at least the degree of protection according to IEC 60529

IP2X or IPXXB, or
– insulation capable of withstanding a test voltage of 500 V, a.c. for 1 min.
702.412 Protection against electric shock in normal service (protection against
direct contact or basic protection)
702.412.3 Protection by obstacles
Protection by obstacles is not applicable.
702.412.4 Protection by placing out of reach
Protection by placing out of reach is not applicable.
702.413 Protection against indirect contact
702.413.1.6 Supplementary equipotential bonding
All extraneous conductive parts in zones 0, 1 and 2 shall be connected by equipotential
bonding conductors and connected to the protective conductor of the exposed conductive parts
of equipment situated in these zones.
NOTE 1 – This connection with the protective conductor may be provided in close proximity to the location, for
example at an accessory or a distribution board or other equipment.

702.413.3 Protection by non-conducting locations
Protection by non-conducting locations is not applicable.
702.413.4 Protection by earth free local equipotential bonding
Protection by earth free local equipotential bonding is not applicable.
702.47 Application of protective measures for safety

702.471.3 Particular requirements for each zone

702.471.3.1 General
With the exception for fountains mentioned in 702.471.3.2 in zones 0 and 1, only protection by

SELV at a nominal voltage not exceeding 12 V a.c. or 30 V d.c. is permitted, the safety source

being installed external to zones 0, 1 and 2 (see also 702.53 and 702.55).

Equipment for use in the interior of basins which are only intended to be into operation when

people are outside zone 0 shall be supplied by circuits protected either by:

– SELV (see clause 411.1 of IEC 60364-4-41), the safety source being installed outside zones
0, 1 and 2; or
– automatic disconnection of the

1) La CEI (Commission Electrotechnique Internationale) est une organisation mondiale de normalisation composée

702.1 Domaine d'application, objet et principes fondamentaux
702.11 Domaine d'application
Les prescriptions particulières de la présente section s'appliquent aux bassins des piscines, aux
bassins des fontaines et aux pédiluves. Elles sont aussi applicables aux volumes les entourant.
Dans ces volumes, en usage normal, le risque de choc électrique est augmenté en raison de la
réduction de la résistance du corps humain et de son contact avec le potentiel de terre.
Les prescriptions relatives aux piscines sont applicables aux pédiluves.
Pour les piscines à usage médical, des prescriptions particulières peuvent être nécessaires.

702.3 Détermination des caractéristiques générales
702.32 Classification des influences externes
Les présentes prescriptions se fondent sur les dimensions des trois volumes (des exemples
sont donnés aux figures 702A, 702B, 702C, 702D et 702E).
a) Volume 0
Ce volume comprend l'intérieur du bassin, ses ouvertures dans les parois ou le fond, et les
pédiluves ou la partie interne de cascades ou de fontaines.
b) Volume 1
Ce volume est limité par
– le volume 0;
– le plan vertical situé à 2 m des bords du bassin;
– le sol ou la surface où peuvent se tenir des personnes;
– un plan horizontal situé à 2,5 m au-dessus du sol ou de la surface.
Lorsque la piscine comporte des plongeoirs, des tremplins, des plots de départ, un toboggan
ou des éléments structuraux destinés à être occupés par des personnes, le volume 1 est limité
par
– un plan vertical situé à 1,5 m autour des plongeoirs, tremplins, plots de départ,
toboggans et éléments structuraux tels que sculptures accessibles et bassins;
– le plan horizontal situé à 2,5 m au-dessus du niveau le plus élevé destiné à être occupé
par des personnes.
c) Volume 2
Ce volume est limité par
– le plan vertical extérieur du volume 1 et le plan parallèle situé à 1,5 m de ce dernier;
– le sol ou la surface destinés à être occupés par des personnes et un plan horizontal situé
à 2,5 m au-dessus du sol ou de la surface.
Il n'existe pas de volume 2 pour les fontaines.

AVANT-PROPOS
1) La CEI (Commission Electrotechnique Internationale) est une organisation mondiale de normalisation composée
de l'ensemble des comités électrotechniques nationaux (Comités nationaux de la CEI). La CEI a pour objet de
favoriser la coopération internationale pour toutes les questions de normalisation dans les domaines de
l'électricité et de l'électronique. A cet effet, la CEI, entre autres activités, publie des Normes internationales.
Leur élaboration est confiée à des comités d'études, aux travaux desquels tout Comité national intéressé par le
sujet traité peut participer. Les organisations internationales, gouvernementales et non gouvernementales, en
liaison avec la CEI, participent également aux travaux. La CEI collabore étroitement avec l'Organisation
Internationale de Normalisation (ISO), selon des conditions fixées par accord entre les deux organisations.
2) Les décisions ou accords officiels de la CEI concernant les questions techniques représentent, dans la mesure
du possible un accord international sur les sujets étudiés, étant donné que les Comités nationaux intéressés
sont représentés dans chaque comité d’études.

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization
for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two
organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the form
of standards, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.
6) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject
of patent rights. The IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard IEC 60364-7-702 has been prepared by IEC technical committee 64:
Electrical installations of buildings.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1983 and constitutes a
technical revision.

other parts of IEC 60364. The numbers following the particular number of section 702 are

those of the corresponding parts, chapters, sections or clauses of IEC 60364. The absence of
