Subland twist drills for holes prior to tapping screw threads
ISO 3438:2013 specifies the dimensions of subland twist drills with Morse taper shanks and cylindrical shanks for holes prior to tapping screw threads. The drills are designed to produce holes prior to tapping metric threads (coarse pitch series) over a selected range of: M8 to M30 for subland twist drills with Morse taper shanks; M3 to M14 for subland twist drills with cylindrical shanks. ISO 3438:2013 complements ISO 2306.

L'ISO 3438:2013 spécifie les dimensions des forets étagés à queue cône Morse et à queue cylindrique pour avant-trous de taraudage. Les forets sont conçus pour effectuer des avant-trous de taraudage à filetage métrique (à pas gros) dans une gamme de filetages sélectionnés: M8 à M30 pour les forets étagés à queue cône Morse; M3 à M14 pour les forets étagés à queue cylindrique. L'ISO 3438:2013 complète l'ISO 2306.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International
Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies
casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 3438 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 29, Small tools, Subcommittee SC 2, High speed
steel cutting tools and their attachments.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 3438:2003), of which it constitutes a
minor revision with the following changes:
— merging of ISO 3438:2003 and ISO 3439:2003 into a single standard;
— adding of an informative annex giving the relationship between the symbols of this document and
the symbols according to the ISO 13399 series.

Avant-propos
L’ISO (Organisation internationale de normalisation) est une fédération mondiale d’organismes
nationaux de normalisation (comités membres de l’ISO). L’élaboration des Normes internationales est
en général confiée aux comités techniques de l’ISO. Chaque comité membre intéressé par une étude
a le droit de faire partie du comité technique créé à cet effet. Les organisations internationales,
gouvernementales et non gouvernementales, en liaison avec l’ISO participent également aux travaux.
L’ISO collabore étroitement avec la Commission électrotechnique internationale (CEI) en ce qui concerne
la normalisation électrotechnique.
Les Normes internationales sont rédigées conformément aux règles données dans les Directives
ISO/CEI, Partie 2.
La tâche principale des comités techniques est d’élaborer les Normes internationales. Les projets de
Normes internationales adoptés par les comités techniques sont soumis aux comités membres pour vote.
Leur publication comme Normes internationales requiert l’approbation de 75 % au moins des comités
membres votants.

Предисловие
Международная организация по стандартизации (ISO) является всемирной федерацией национальных
организаций по стандартизации (комитетов-членов ISO). Разработка международных стандартов
обычно осуществляется техническими комитетами ISO. Каждый комитет-член, заинтересованный в
деятельности, для которой был создан технический комитет, имеет право быть представленным в этом
комитете. Международные организации, правительственные и неправительственные, имеющие связи
с ISO, также принимают участие в работах. Что касается стандартизации в области электротехники, то
ISO работает в тесном сотрудничестве с Международной электротехнической комиссией (IEC).
Проекты международных стандартов разрабатываются в соответствии с правилами Директив ISO/IEC,

Основной задачей технических комитетов является разработка международных стандартов. Проекты
международных стандартов, принятые техническими комитетами, рассылаются комитетам-членам на
голосование. Для опубликования их в качестве международного стандарта требуется одобрение не

Международный стандарт ISO 3438 подготовлен Техническим комитетом ISO/TC 29, Ручной

приспособления к ним.
Третье издание отменяет и заменяет второе (ISO 3438:2003), которое незначительно пересмотрено со
следующими изменениями:
— стандарты ISO3438:2003 и ISO3439:2003 объединены в один стандарт;
— добавлено информативное приложение, устанавливающее взаимосвязь между символами в
данном документе с символами согласно серии ISO13399.
