Tools for pressing - Ball-lock punch retainers - Part 2: Types C and D, reduced for light duty

ISO 11900-2:2008 specifies the dimensions and their tolerances, in millimetres, of reduced ball-lock punch retainers, type C and type D, for light duty, and of their backing plug, the main use of which is the retention of ball-lock punches in accordance with ISO 10071-1, when punching holes in steel sheets. It also gives material guidelines, and specifies the hardness and designation of ball-lock punch retainers that are in accordance with its specifications.

Overview

ISO 11900-2:2008 - Tools for pressing: Ball-lock punch retainers - Part 2: Types C and D, reduced for light duty - specifies the detailed dimensions, tolerances and basic material/hardness guidance for reduced ball‑lock punch retainers (types C and D) and their backing plugs used in light‑duty punching of steel sheets. The standard’s primary purpose is to ensure interchangeability and reliable retention of ball‑lock punches used in accordance with ISO 10071-1.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Dimensions and tolerances in millimetres for reduced ball‑lock retainers (type C and D) and backing plugs for light‑duty applications. Main use is retention of ball‑lock punches when punching holes in steel sheets.
  • Dimensional data: Exact sizes and forms are given in the standard’s figures and tables for each nominal diameter and type. (See ISO 11900-2 for the full dimension tables and drawings.)
  • General tolerance: For dimensions not individually toleranced the general tolerance is ±0.25 mm.
  • Material and hardness: Material choice is by the manufacturer; recommended hardness is 46 ± 3 HRC for ball‑lock punch retainers and 55 ± 5 HRC for backing plugs.
  • Functional features: Provision for dowel‑pin holes (per ISO 8735), counterbores for fastening (per ISO 273) and screw heads (per ISO 4762) are specified or referenced.
  • Designation format: Retainers are designated with the format: “Ball‑lock retainer ISO 11900‑2 - [Type] - [Diameter]” (example: Ball‑lock retainer ISO 11900‑2 - C - 10).
  • Normative references: The standard references ISO 10071-1 (ball‑lock punches), ISO 8735, ISO 273 and ISO 4762 among others.

Applications

  • Standardizes components used in light‑duty press tooling for sheet metal punching operations.
  • Ensures interchangeability of ball‑lock punch retainers in:
    • Sheet metal fabrication and stamping shops
    • Toolmaking and die‑making workshops
    • Maintenance and procurement of press tool components
  • Useful where precision retention of ball‑lock punches is required for accurate hole punching in steel sheets.

Who should use this standard

  • Toolmakers, die designers and press tool engineers specifying punch retention components.
  • Production engineers and maintenance technicians in stamping and metal‑forming industries.
  • Purchasing/specification teams procuring replacement retainers and backing plugs.
  • Quality and inspection personnel validating tolerances and hardness of retainers.

Related standards

  • ISO 11900‑1: Ball‑lock punch retainers, types A and B (rectangular/square) for light duty.
  • ISO 11900‑3: Type E, reduced for heavy duty.
  • ISO 10071‑1: Ball‑lock punches for light duty.
  • ISO 8735, ISO 273, ISO 4762 (referenced for pins, counterbores and screws).

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 11900-2 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 29, Small tools, Subcommittee SC 8, Tools for
pressing and moulding.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 11900-2:2001), of which it constitutes a minor
revision. In particular, the references given in Clause 2 have been updated, and the indication of surface

Avant-propos
