BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 453, Surface Active Agents. Glossary. First List, was
drawn up by Technical Committee ISO/TC 91, Surface Acrive Agents, the Secretariat of
which is held by the Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR).

Work on this question by the Technical Committee began in 1960 and led, in 1962,
to the adoption of a Draft IS0 Recommendation.
In October 1963, this Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 607) was circulated to all the
IS0 Member Bodies for enquiry. It was approved by the following Member Bodies:

The Draft IS0 Recommendation was then submitted by correspondence to the IS0
Council which decided, in November 1965, to accept it as an IS0 RECOMMENDATION.

INTRODUCTION
The following definitions relate to systems in which liquid is present.
1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this IS0 Recommendation is to define some of the general terms most frequently
used in the field of surface active agents.
2. DEFINITIONS
2.1 Surface active agent
A chemical compound which, when dissolved or dispersed in a liquid, is preferentially
adsorbed at an interface, giving rise to a number of physico-chemical or chemical properties
of practical interest.
The molecule of the compound includes at least one group with an affinity for markedly
polar surfaces, ensuring in most cases solubilization in water, and a group which has little
affinity for water.

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation ISO/R 453, Agents de surface. Vocabulaire. Première Liste,
a été élaborée par le Comité Technique ISO/TC 91, Agents de surface, dont le Secrétariat
est assuré par l’Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question furent entrepris par le Comité Technique en 1960
et aboutirent en 1962 à l’adoption d’un Projet de Recommandation ISO.
En octobre 1963, ce Projet de Recommandation IS0 (No 607) fut soumis à l’enquête
de tous les Comités de 1’ISO. I1 fut approuvé par les Comités Membres suivants:

Le Projet de Recommandation IS0 fut alors soumis par correspondance au Conseil
de I’ISO, qui décida, en novembre 1965, de l’accepter comme RECOMMANDATION ISO.
