Overview
ISO 14930:2012, "Leather - Leather for dress gloves - Specification", defines requirements, sampling and test methods for chrome and chrome‑alum tanned leather intended for the manufacture of dress (ceremonial) gloves. Published by ISO in 2012, the standard sets quality and performance criteria for glove leather and specifies how laboratories and manufacturers should sample, prepare and report test results. It explicitly excludes chamois, alum‑tawed leather and leather for safety or sports gloves.
Key topics and requirements
The standard covers physical, chemical and fastness properties with referenced test methods. Key technical requirements include:
- pH of aqueous extract: ≥ 3.5 (ISO 4045). If pH < 4, ΔpH ≤ 0.7.
- Shrinkage temperature: ≥ 90 °C (ISO 3380).
- Tear strength: ≥ 15.0 N (double edge tear - ISO 3377-2).
- Elongation at 2 N/mm²: ≥ 20 % (ISO 3376).
- Colour fastness:
- To-to‑and‑fro rubbing (ISO 11640): dry felt 50 cycles ≥ grade 3; wet felt 10 cycles ≥ grade 2.
- To perspiration (ISO 11641): ≥ grade 3 for unlined gloves.
- To light (ISO 105‑B02): ≥ grade 3 (blue scale).
Sampling and sample preparation:
- Sampling locations per ISO 2418; number of samples per ISO 2588 (dispute cases) - max five samples for large lots.
- Sample preparation and conditioning per ISO 2419; chemical test sample prep per ISO 4044.
Test reporting must include at minimum: reference to ISO 14930, test results (Table 1), date/place of tests, full sample identification and any deviations from the standard.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 14930 is practical for:
- Glove manufacturers specifying leather acceptance criteria for dress gloves.
- Tanneries and leather suppliers producing chrome or chrome‑alum tanned leather for fashion accessories.
- Quality control and testing laboratories performing leather performance and fastness testing.
- Procurement, product development and compliance teams creating purchase specifications or contractual requirements.
- Designers and specifiers who need standardized performance benchmarks for glove materials.
Using ISO 14930 helps ensure consistent leather quality, reduces rejects, and supports clear supplier contracts and lab reporting.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 14930 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 120, Leather, Subcommittee SC 2, Tanned leather.
