BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 220, Method of Sampling Raw Cotton for Testing, was drawn
up by Technical Committee ISO/TC 38, Textiles, the Secretariat of which is held by the British
Standards Institution (B.S.I.).
Work on this question by the Technical Committee began in 1948 and led, in 1958, to the
adoption of a Draft IS0 Recommendation.

METHOD OF SAMPLING RAW COTTON FOR TESTING
1. SCOPE
1.1 A procedure is indicated for sampling raw cotton fibre for the purpose of determining
its various properties.
1.2 The various stages of sampling, intended to reduce the quantity of cotton to be handled
at different levels of the bulk to be tested, are described.
1.3 Special methods of sampling may be given in specifications or contracts for cotton, when
the nature of the materials or other circumstances make them desirable.
2. DEFINITIONS
2.1 Bulk source. One or more bales of cotton, for example:
(a) a bale,
(b) a group of bales of one variety,
(c) a group of bales of a particular grade,
(d) a group of bales from a given area,
(e) a group of bales of a particular blend or a mix at the mill.
2.2 Laboratory bulk sample. That portion of cotton taken from the bulk source in such a
way as to ensure its representative character and to provide a quantity small enough to
be handled with ease in the laboratory.
2.3 Laboratory test sample. That portion of cotton fibres taken from the laboratory bulk
sample in such a way as to ensure its representative character and to provide a quantity
small enough to be easily convertible into test specimens.
2.4 Test specimen. That portion of cotton fibres taken from the laboratory test sample which
is to be placed in the testing machine at one time in order to determine a particular property.

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation ISO/R 220, Méthode d’échantillonnage des jibres de coton brut pour
essais, a été élaborée par le Comité Technique lSO/TC 38, Textiles, dont le Secrétariat est assuré
par la British Standards Institution (B.S.I.).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question furent entrepris par le Comité Technique dès 1948
et aboutirent en 1958 à l’adoption d’un Projet de Recommandation ISO.
En septembre 1958, ce Projet de Recommandation IS0 (NO 224) fut soumis à l’enquête de
tous les Comités Membres de I’ISO. I1 fut approuvé, sous réserve de quelques modifications,
par les Comités Membres suivants:

Danemark Norvège U.R.S.S.
Espagne Pologne U.S.A.

Cinq Comités Membres se sont déclarés opposés à l’approbation du Projet:

Le Projet de Recommandation IS0 fut alors soumis par correspondance au Conseil de
1’1SO qui décida, en décembre 1961, de l’accepter comme RECOMMANDATION ISO.

DES FIBRES DE COTON BRUT POUR ESSAIS
1. OBJET
Un mode opératoire est indiqué pour l’échantillonnage des fibres de coton brut en vue

d’en déterminer les différentes propriétés.
Les différentes étapes de prélèvements, destinés à réduire la quantité de coton à mani-

puler aux différents états du lot à essayer, sont décrites.
1.3 Des moyens d’échantillonnage particuliers peuvent être donnés dans les spécifications
ou les contrats pour le coton, lorsque la nature des matériaux ou d’autres circonstances
les rendent désirables.
2. DÉFINITIONS
2.1 Lot. Une ou plusieurs balles de coton, par exemple:
a) une balle,
b) un groupe de balles d’une variété,
c) un groupe de balles d’un certain grade,
ci) un groupe de balles provenant d’une zone déterminée,
e) un groupe de balles d’un certain mélange ou un mélange de filature.
Echantillon global de laboratoire. La partie de coton prélevée du lot de façon à en assurer

le caractère représentatif et à procurer une quantité suffisamment petite pour pouvoir être
aisément manipulée au laboratoire.
2.3 Echantillon d’essai. La partie de fibres de coton prélevée de l’échantillon global de labo-
ratoire de façon à en préserver le caractère représentatif et à procurer une quantité suffi-
samment petite pour pouvoir être aisément transformée en éprouvette.
2.4 Eprouvette. La partie de fibres de coton prélevée de l’échantillon d’essai qui est destinée
à être introduite en une seule opération dans l’appareil d’essai pour la détermination
d’une propriété particulière.
