Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards

ISO 11646 was prepared by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) Technical Committee
CEN/TC 289, Leather, in collaboration with the Physical Tests Commission of the International Union
of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies (IUP Commission, IULTCS), in accordance with the
Agreement on technical cooperation between ISO and CEN (Vienna Agreement).
IULTCS, originally formed in 1897, is a worldwide organization of professional leather societies to
further the advancement of leather science and technology. IULTCS has three Commissions, which are
responsible for establishing international methods for the sampling and testing of leather. ISO recognizes
IULTCS as an international standardizing body for the preparation of test methods for leather.
The first edition of ISO 11646 was based on IUP 32 published in J Soc. Leather Tech. Chem. 73, pp. 23-24
(1989), and declared an official method of the IULTCS in October 1989.
This second edition of ISO 11646 cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 11646:1993), which has
been technically revised in 4.2 and 5.1.2, to clarify the importance of using only one specific standard
atmosphere (20 °C and 65 % RH).
This International Standard is written in SI units, in accordance with ISO/IEC Directives. The use of the
square foot, still common in the leather trade in some countries, is discouraged. If, for commercial reasons,

the use of the square foot may seem necessary, it is obtained by the conversion 1 sq ft = 0,092 9 m .

1 Scope
This International Standard specifies a method of measuring the area of pieces of leather. It is intended
only for the measurement of dressed and other dry flexible leathers.

The area of the conditioned leather is measured with a mechanical pin-wheel machine.
4 Apparatus

L’ISO 11646 a été élaborée par le Comité européen de Normalisation (CEN) Comité Technique CEN/TC 289,
Cuir, en collaboration avec la Commission des essais physiques de l’Union internationale des sociétés de
techniciens et chimistes du cuir, conformément à l’Accord de coopération technique entre l’ISO et le CEN
(Accord de Vienne).
La première édition de l’ISO 11646 est fondée sur l’IUP 32 publiée dans le J Soc. Leather Tech. Chem. 73,
pages 23-24 (1989), et déclarée méthode officielle de l’IULTCS en octobre 1989.
Cette deuxième édition de l’ISO 11646 annule et remplace la première édition (ISO 11646:1993) dont
les paragraphes 4.2 et 5.1.2 ont fait l’objet d’une révision technique visant à clarifier l’importance pour
utiliser seulement une atmosphère normale spécifique (20 °C et 65 % d’humidité relative).
Fondée en 1897, l’IULTCS est une organisation mondiale de sociétés professionnelles du cuir, destinée à
faire avancer les sciences et technologies du cuir. L’IULTCS dispose de trois commissions responsables
de l’établissement de méthodes internationales d’échantillonnage et d’essai du cuir. L’ISO reconnaît
l’IULTCS en tant qu’organisme de normalisation international chargé de l’élaboration de méthodes
d’essai applicables au cuir.
La présente Norme internationale est établie en unités SI, conformément aux directives de l’ISO. L’emploi
du «square foot» (pied carré), encore courant dans le secteur du cuir de certains pays, est déconseillé.
Si l’utilisation de cette unité de mesure peut sembler nécessaire pour des raisons commerciales, les

3 Principe
La surface du cuir conditionné est mesurée à l’aide d’une mesureuse mécanique à roues à picots.
4 Appareillage
4.1 Mesureuse mécanique à roues à picots
Il convient que la machine utilisée soit dotée d’un cylindre d’entraînement dont la vitesse est de préférence
20 m/min ± 2 m/min. Il convient que la distance entre les centres de picots de deux roues adjacentes,
mesurée parallèlement à l’axe du cylindre muni des roues, soit de préférence égale à 25,4 mm ± 2,5 mm.
Des mesureuses à roues à picots non conformes aux présentes recommandations peuvent aussi être
utilisées, mais leurs valeurs nominales doivent être déclarées dans le rapport d’essai. (Voir l’Annexe A

Le présent projet a été élaboré dans le cadre du Comité européen de normalisation (CEN) et soumis

Avant-propos
L'ISO (Organisation internationale de normalisation) est une fédération mondiale d'organismes nationaux de
normalisation (comités membres de l'ISO). L'élaboration des Normes internationales est en général confiée
aux comités techniques de l'ISO. Chaque comité membre intéressé par une étude a le droit de faire partie du
comité technique créé à cet effet. Les organisations internationales, gouvernementales et non
gouvernementales, en liaison avec l'ISO participent également aux travaux. L'ISO collabore étroitement avec
la Commission électrotechnique internationale (CEI) en ce qui concerne la normalisation électrotechnique.
Les Normes internationales sont rédigées conformément aux règles données dans les Directives ISO/CEI,
Partie 2.
La tâche principale des comités techniques est d'élaborer les Normes internationales. Les projets de Normes
internationales adoptés par les comités techniques sont soumis aux comités membres pour vote. Leur
publication comme Normes internationales requiert l'approbation de 75 % au moins des comités membres
votants.
L'attention est appelée sur le fait que certains des éléments du présent document peuvent faire l'objet de
droits de propriété intellectuelle ou de droits analogues. L'ISO ne saurait être tenue pour responsable de ne
pas avoir identifié de tels droits de propriété et averti de leur existence.
L'ISO 11646 a été élaborée par la Commission des essais physiques de l’Union internationale des sociétés
de techniciens et chimistes du cuir (Commission IUC, IULTCS), en collaboration avec le Comité technique du
Comité européen de normalisation (CEN) CEN/TC 289, Cuir, dont le secrétariat est tenu par UNI,
conformément à l’Accord de coopération technique entre l’ISO et le CEN (Accord de Vienne). Elle est fondée
sur l'IUP 32 publiée dans le J Soc. Leather Tech. Chem. 73, pages 23-24 (1989), et déclarée méthode
officielle de l’IULTCS en octobre 1989.
Fondée en 1897, l’IULTCS est une organisation mondiale de sociétés professionnelles du cuir, destinée à
faire avancer les sciences et technologies du cuir. L’IULTCS dispose de trois commissions responsables de
l’établissement de méthodes internationales d’échantillonnage et d’essai du cuir. L’ISO reconnaît l’IULTCS en
tant qu’organisme de normalisation international chargé de l’élaboration de méthodes d’essai applicables au
cuir.
Cette deuxième édition annule et remplace la première édition (ISO 11646:1993) dont les paragraphes 4.2 et
5.1.2 ont fait l’objet d’une révision technique visant à clarifier l'importance de l'utilisation d'une atmosphère
normale spécifique (20°C et 65 % d'humidité relative).
La présente Norme internationale est établie en unités SI, conformément aux directives de l'ISO. L'emploi du
« square foot » (pied carré), encore courant dans le secteur du cuir de certains pays, est déconseillé. Si
l'utilisation de cette unité de mesure peut sembler nécessaire pour des raisons commerciales, les valeurs sont

obtenues grâce à la conversion 1 sq ft = 0,0929 m .

1 Domaine d'application
La présente Norme internationale spécifie une méthode de détermination de la surface de morceaux de cuir.
Elle est destinée exclusivement au mesurage de cuirs passés en mégie et autres peaux souples et sèches.
