La présente Norme internationale définit la qualité des marteaux à main, pour autant que la tête des marteaux et leur emmanchement soient concernés.Elle spécifie les caractéristiques et les méthodes de vérification des têtes de marteaux et de leur assemblage.Elle est applicable aux marteaux utilisés dans les conditions normales d'utilisation, c'est-à-dire uniquement pour une frappe sur des pièces dont la dureté est au plus égale à 46 HRC.NOTE La frappe sur des pièces de dureté plus élevée risquant de provoquer des écaillages, elle nécessite de choisir des marteaux de caractéristiques différentes de celles spécifiées dans la présente Norme internationale.La présente Norme internationale n'est pas applicable aux marteaux avec tête en acier dont la masse de la tête est inférieure à 100 g.

It applies to steel‑headed hammers used under normal conditions (striking workpieces up to 46 HRC) and excludes heads lighter than 100 g. The standard specifies heat‑treatment, hardness, crack detection, dimensional chamfering and a set of mechanical tests to verify safe assembly and performance.

  • When a bevel/chamfer is present on the striking surface, it must be at least 1/15 of the head width and inclined 40°–50°.
• Mechanical tests
  • Handle moisture: wooden handles must be conditioned at 10–15% moisture per ISO 3130 prior to testing.
  • Pull/Compression (assembly) test: head/handle joint is tested under tensile or compressive loads defined as a function of head mass (see Table 1); test verifies no slippage, cracking or other assembly failure.
  • Bending test for nail‑puller hammers: apply a 125 Nm bending moment near the handle end for at least 10 s; no damage permitted.
  • Grip/handle adhesion: applied torque 10 Nm on fitted handles/overmoulded grips - no rotation allowed.
• Marking
  • Permanent, legible marking on the head with at minimum the manufacturer’s name or mark.

1 Scope
This International Standard defines the quality features of hand hammers which are judged to be satisfactory as far
as the hammer head and the assembly are concerned.
It defines the characteristics and verification methods for hammer heads and for their assembly.
It applies to hammers used under normal working conditions, i.e. only used to strike items having a maximum
hardness of 46 HRC.
NOTE Striking items of a greater hardness is liable to cause chipping, this necessitates choosing hammers with properties
different from those defined in this International Standard.
This International Standard does not apply to steel hammer heads with a head mass of less than 100 g.
