BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 198, Double-Deck Flat Pallets for tlzrougli Transit qf
Goods, was drawn up by Technical Committee ISOiTC 51, Pallets for Unit Load Method
of Materials Handling, the Secretariat of which is held by the British Standards Institution
(B.S.I.).
Work on this question by the Technical Committee began in 1952 and led, in 1954, to
the adoption of a first Draft IS0 Recommendation, dealing with two pallet sizes. This
was circulated, in May 1954, to all the
first Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 42)
IS0 Member Bodies for enquiry.
However, during its third meeting, held in Stockholm in June 1955, the Technical
Committee decided to complete the Draft so as to include a third pallet size, as well as the
specifications concerning the construction details of the pallets in question. In November
1959, the Draft thus completed was circulated to all the IS0 Member Bodies as a Second
Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 42) and was approved, subject to some editorial amend-
ments, by the following Member Bodies:

Greece Portugal
One Member Body opposed the approval of the Draft: Germany.
The Draft IS0 Recommendation was then submitted by correspondence to the 1SO
Council, which decided, in May 1961, to accept it as an IS0 RECOMMENDATION.

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation ISO/R 198, Palettes à double plancher pour transport direct de
charges unitaires, a été élaborée par le Comité Technique ISO/TC 51, Plateaux de clznrge-
nient pour. transport et manutention directe de charges unitaires, dont le Secrétariat est
assuré par la British Standards Institution (B.S.I.).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question furent entrepris par le Comité Technique dès
1952 et aboutirent en 1954 à l’adoption d’un premier Projet de Recommandation IS0
relatif à deux modèles de palettes. Ce premier Projet de Recommandation IS0 (NO 42)

fut soumis, en mai 1954, à l’enquête de tous les Comités Membres de 1’ISO.
Cependant, au cours de sa troisième réunion, tenue à Stockholm en juin 1955, le Comité
Technique décida de compléter le Projet de manière à y englober un troisième modèle de
palettes, ainsi que des spécifications concernant les détails de construction des palettes en
question. En novembre 1959, ce Projet ainsi complété fut soumis à tous les Comités Mem-
bres de l’HO comme Deuxième Projet de Recommandation IS0 (NO 42). I1 fut approuvé,
SOLIS réserve de quelques modifications d’ordre rédactionnel, par les Comités Membres
suivants :

de 1’ISO qui décida, en mai 1961, de l’accepter comme RECOMMANDATION ISO.
