Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) and IEC (the International Electrotechnical
Commission) form the specialized system for worldwide standardization. National bodies that are members of
ISO or IEC participate in the development of International Standards through technical committees
established by the respective organization to deal with particular fields of technical activity. ISO and IEC
technical committees collaborate in fields of mutual interest. Other international organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO and IEC, also take part in the work. In the field of information
technology, ISO and IEC have established a joint technical committee, ISO/IEC JTC 1.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of the joint technical committee is to prepare International Standards. Draft International
Standards adopted by the joint technical committee are circulated to national bodies for voting. Publication as
an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the national bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO and IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO/IEC 9834-3 was prepared by Joint Technical Committee ISO/IEC JTC 1, Information technology,
Subcommittee SC 6, Telecommunications and information exchange between systems in collaboration with
ITU-T. The identical text is published as ITU-T Rec. X.662.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO/IEC 9834-3:1998), which has been technically
revised.

Introduction
ITU-T Rec. X.660 | ISO/IEC 9834-1 defines procedures for registration to meet requirements for assignment of

unambiguous names (e.g., object identifiers as specified in ITU-T Rec. X.680 | ISO/IEC 8824-1, or Distinguished
Names as specified in ITU-T Rec. X.501 | ISO/IEC 9594-2) to objects (distinguishable entities). These registration
procedures are generally applicable to registration independent of the type of object involved. In particular, ITU-T
Rec. X.660 | ISO/IEC 9834-1 defines the registration-hierarchical-name-tree, which is a tree whose nodes correspond to
objects that are registered and whose non-leaf nodes may be Registration Authorities. ITU-T Rec. X.660 |
ISO/IEC 9834-1 also defines procedures for the delegation of authority for the assignment of names in order to ensure
that names are unambiguous.
The root of the ASN.1 object identifier tree is ITU-T Rec. X.660 | ISO/IEC 9834-1. There are three top-level arcs:

NOTE 1 – In accordance with ITU-T Rec. X.680 | ISO/IEC 8824-1, the secondary identifiers ccitt and joint-iso-ccitt
may be used as synonyms for itu-t and joint-iso-itu-t, respectively.
NOTE 2 – itu-r is an additional secondary identifier for top-level arc 0.
The Registration Authority for the nodes identified by the top-level arcs itu-t(0) and iso(1) are provided by ITU-T
Rec. X.660 | ISO/IEC 9834-1, Annex A. Further discussion is beyond the scope of this Recommendation | International
Standard.
The Registration Authority identified by {joint-iso-itu-t(2)} is the "International Registration Authority for
assignment of values to ASN.1 object identifier arcs beneath the top-level arc jointly administered by ISO and ITU-T".

This Recommendation | International Standard is concerned with a Registration Authority which performs a purely
administrative role as defined in ITU-T Rec. X.660 | ISO/IEC 9834-1.

L'ISO (Organisation internationale de normalisation) et la CEI (Commission électrotechnique internationale)
forment le système spécialisé de la normalisation mondiale. Les organismes nationaux membres de l'ISO ou
de la CEI participent au développement de Normes internationales par l'intermédiaire des comités techniques
créés par l'organisation concernée afin de s'occuper des domaines particuliers de l'activité technique. Les
comités techniques de l'ISO et de la CEI collaborent dans des domaines d'intérêt commun. D'autres
organisations internationales, gouvernementales et non gouvernementales, en liaison avec l'ISO et la CEI
participent également aux travaux. Dans le domaine des technologies de l'information, l'ISO et la CEI ont créé
un comité technique mixte, l'ISO/CEI JTC 1.
Les Normes internationales sont rédigées conformément aux règles données dans les Directives ISO/CEI,

La tâche principale du comité technique mixte est d'élaborer les Normes internationales. Les projets de
Normes internationales adoptés par le comité technique mixte sont soumis aux organismes nationaux pour
vote. Leur publication comme Normes internationales requiert l'approbation de 75 % au moins des
organismes nationaux votants.

Introduction
La Rec. UIT-T X.660 | ISO/CEI 9834-1 définit les procédures d'enregistrement permettant de répondre aux
prescriptions pour l'assignation de noms non ambigus (tels que les identificateurs d'objet spécifiés dans la Rec. UIT-T
X.680 | ISO/CEI 8824-1 ou les noms distinctifs spécifiés dans la Rec. UIT-T X.501 | ISO/CEI 9594-2) à des objets (des
entités pouvant faire l'objet d'une distinction). Ces procédures d'enregistrement sont généralement applicables
indépendamment du type d'objet en question. La Rec. UIT-T X.660 | ISO/CEI 9834-1 définit en particulier l'arbre de
nom s résultant d'un enregistrement hiérarchisé, qui est un arbre dont les sommets correspondent aux objets enregistrés
et dont les sommets non-feuilles peuvent être des organismes d'enregistrement. La Rec. UIT-T X.660 | ISO/CEI 9834-1
définit également les procédures de délégation de l'organisme pour l'assignation de noms pour s'assurer que ceux-ci ne

sont pas ambigus.
La racine de l'arbre des identificateurs d'objet ASN.1 est la Rec. UIT-T X.660 | ISO/CEI 9834-1. Il y a trois arcs de
niveau supérieur:

NOTE 1 – En vertu de la Rec. UIT-T X.680 | ISO/CEI 8824-1, les identificateurs secondaires ccitt et joint-iso-ccitt

NOTE 2 – itu-r est un identificateur secondaire additionnel pour l'arc de niveau supérieur 0.
Les organismes d'enregistrement pour les noeuds identifiés par les arcs de niveau supérieur itu-t (0) et iso (1)
figurent dans la Rec. UIT-T X.660 | ISO/CEI 9834-1, Annexe A. Un examen plus approfondi n'entre pas dans le cadre
de la présente Recommandation | Norme internationale.
L'organisme d'enregistrement identifié par {joint-iso-itu-t(2)} est celui de "l'organisme d'enregistrement
international chargé d'attribuer des valeurs aux arcs des identificateurs d'objet ASN.1 au-dessous de l'arc de niveau

supérieur administré conjointement par l'ISO et l'UIT-T". Le fonctionnement de cet organisme d'enregistrement est
spécifié dans la présente Recommandation | Norme internationale.
La présente Recommandation | Norme internationale concerne un organisme d'enregistrement ayant un rôle purement
administratif, comme défini dans la Rec. UIT-T X.660 | ISO/CEI 9834-1.
