This document specifies a method for the determination of total organic carbon (TOC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total bound nitrogen (TNb) and dissolved bound nitrogen (DNb) in the form of free ammonia, ammonium, nitrite, nitrate and organic compounds capable of conversion to nitrogen oxides under the conditions described. The procedure is carried out instrumentally. NOTE Generally the method can be applied for the determination of total carbon (TC) and total inorganic carbon (TIC), see Annex A. The method is applicable to water samples (e.g. drinking water, raw water, ground water, surface water, sea water, waste water, leachates). The method allows a determination of TOC and DOC ≥ 1 mg/l and TNb and DNb ≥ 1 mg/l. The upper working range is restricted by instrument-dependent conditions (e.g. injection volume). Higher concentrations can be determined after appropriate dilution of the sample. For samples containing volatile organic compounds (e.g. industrial waste water), the difference method is used, see Annex A. Cyanide, cyanate and particles of elemental carbon (soot), when present in the sample, can be determined together with the organic carbon. The method is not appropriate for the determination of volatile, or purgeable, organic carbon under the conditions described by this method. Dissolved nitrogen gas (N2) is not determined.

Introduction
Total organic carbon (TOC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total bound nitrogen (TNb) and dissolved
bound nitrogen (DNb) are an analytical convention, whose characteristic is a parameter used for water
quality control purposes. These parameters represent the sum of organically bound carbon as well as the
sum of inorganic and organic nitrogen (but not nitrogen gas), which can be dissolved in water or bonded
to dissolved or suspended matter under specified conditions and, if the sample is not filtered, includes
that associated with suspended matter. It does not give information on the nature of the substances. The
abbreviations TOC, DOC, TNb, DNb, TC and TIC refer to values determined by the high temperature method.
Details of a validation interlaboratory trial with the performance data for TOC or DOC and TNb or DNb, all
using the high temperature method in this document, are given in Annex B.

L'ISO (Organisation internationale de normalisation) est une fédération mondiale d'organismes nationaux
de normalisation (comités membres de l'ISO). L'élaboration des Normes internationales est en général
confiée aux comités techniques de l'ISO. Chaque comité membre intéressé par une étude a le droit de faire
partie du comité technique créé à cet effet. Les organisations internationales, gouvernementales et non

Le présent document a été élaboré par le comité technique ISO/TC 147, Qualité de l'eau, sous-comité SC 2,
Méthodes physiques, chimiques et biochimiques, en collaboration avec le comité technique CEN/TC 230, Analyse
de l'eau, du Comité européen de normalisation (CEN), conformément à l'Accord de coopération technique
entre l'ISO et le CEN (Accord de Vienne).
Cette seconde édition annule et remplace la première édition (ISO 20236:2018), qui a fait l'objet d'une
révision technique.
Les principales modifications sont les suivantes :
— élargissement de la méthode pour déterminer les concentrations < 1 mg/l de C et N ;
— mise à jour des références normatives ;
— élargissement de la méthode pour appliquer des solutions d'étalonnage monocomposant, par exemple
basées sur le sulfate d'ammonium ou le nitrate de potassium ;
— ajout du A.5 Rapport d'essai afin d'exiger le référencement des différentes méthodes dans le rapport
d'essai.
Il convient que l'utilisateur adresse tout retour d'information ou toute question concernant le présent

Introduction
Le carbone organique total (COT), le carbone organique dissous (COD), l'azote lié total (TNb) et l'azote lié
dissous (DNb) sont une convention analytique dont les caractéristiques constituent des paramètres utilisés
à des fins de contrôle de la qualité de l'eau. Ces paramètres représentent la somme du carbone sous forme
organique ainsi que la somme de l'azote minéral et organique (en excluant l'azote gazeux), pouvant être
dissouts dans l'eau ou liés à des matières dissoutes ou en en suspension dans des conditions spécifiées ou,
si l'échantillon n'est pas filtré, comprenant celles associées aux matières en suspension. Ces paramètres ne
donnent aucune information concernant la nature des substances. Les abréviations COT, COD, TNb, DNb, CT
et CIT désignent les valeurs déterminées par la méthode à haute température.
Les détails d'un essai interlaboratoires de validation avec les données de performance pour le COT ou COD
et le TNb ou DNb, qui utilisent tous la méthode à haute température du présent document, sont donnés à
l'Annexe B.
