BRIEF HISTORY

The IS0 Recommendation R 258, Common Names for Pesticides-Third List, was drawn up

by Technical Committee ISO/TC 81, Common Names for Pesticides, the Secretariat of which is

held by the British Standards Institution (B.S.I.).

Work on this question by the Technical Committee began in 1957 and led, in 1959, to the

adoption of a Draft IS0 Recommendation.

In May 1960, this Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 377) was circulated to all the IS0

Member Bodies for enquiry. It was approved, subject to a few modifications of an editorial

nature, by the following Member Bodies :
Republic of
Austria Germany
Be 1 g i u m Greece South Africa
Canada Hung a r y Romania
Chile India Spain
Sweden
Colombia Ireland
Czechoslovakia Israel United Kingdom
New Zealand U.S.S.R.
France
Three Member Bodies opposed the approval of the Draft:
Argentina Italy Netherlands

The Draft IS0 Recommendation was then submitted by correspondence to the IS0 Council,

which decided, in May 1962, to accept it as an IS0 RECOMMENDATION.

IS0 Recommendation R 258
COMMON NAMES FOR PESTICIDES
THIRD LIST *
FOREWORD

This IS0 Recommendation gives the third list of common names approved by Technical

Committee ISO/TC 8 1, Common Names for Pesticides, for certain pesticides of international

importance. The chemical name in conformity with the rules of the International Union of

Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) is given in each case, as well as chemical formulae and

notes covering some of the names. Where the interpretations of the rules of IUPAC by The

Chemical Society, London, and the American Chemical Society, New York, differ, both versions

are given. That of The Chemical Society is indicated by an asterisk (*), that of the American

Chemical Society by a dagger (t). Chemical formulae and notes concerning some of the names

are also given. The application of each compound is given in a separate column according

to the following classes :
A Insecticides or acaricides
B Fungicides
C Herbicides
r' D Rodenticides

It is proposed in due course to issue further IS0 Recommendations for approved common

names. In some cases, widely used names are not available for international use at the present

time, because they are protected by trade marks in certain countries.

The foregoing lists constitute the subject-matter of the following IS0 Recommendations:

R 116, Common Names for Pesticides, First List,
R 219, Common Names for Pesticides, Second Lisi.
